NC30 gearbox & neutral

Hi all is your NC30 changing gear smoothly? On mine it can be bastard sometime! First gear goes in with clunk, also sometimes when changing gear...

Also how easy for you to find neutral? I have to do it before the bike stops everytime...

Any advise?

hey!
i used to have a cagiva mito 125 and finding the neutral on that was the same as yours. not sure if my clutch was biting slightly or not but never did get down to the problem.

On my nc30 it used to be a bit stiff changing gear but it found neutral no problem. When i changed the oil the manual says 2.4 litres should drain out of it but mine didnt have enough oil in. I changed it and put the correct amount in this time and it changes gear fine now....maybe you just need a fresh oil change? Check if 2.4 litres drains out! (2.5 if you are doing an oil filter change aswell)

just an idea...may be some one else has a better idea than me though....

Have you seen any of the shift kits? Changes the detent spring and arm and/or shift star. If you have a high mileage bike yours may be a bit worn.

its a bit of a characteristic of the VFR that neutral is a bit of a bastad to find with the bike stationary.
it is a bit of an art just snicking it into neutral while still rolling.
the other trick is raising the revs to about 3.5 and it seems to select neutral easier.

although the haynes recommends 6K between oil changes i tend to do it based on how gear changes feel and that usually means an oil change every about 4K KMS. it may be expensive but it gives me piece of mine.

also check your chain tension

I had this same problem after fitting new rearsets. Until.... that is... I read the haynes manual. There is a . "dot" on the shift shaft which must line up with a mark on clamp for the shift shaft. If these are lined up properly then shifting (including finding neutral) become much easier. Check this first before muck about with your clutch or other bits.

Intersting point! let me check the shift shaft then, have to get my haynes manual out to find out where the "dot" is tho.

Also thanks nc30sam and declangaelic I think it is about time to change my engine oil and make sure it is in correct amount.

But clunking gearbox is normal for this bike then??

I had this problem too. It would NOT go to neutral from idle and it was really clunky going to first, also the clutch was dragging slightly. To fix most of this I had to dismantle the clutch, change the friction plates and file down the grooves on the clutch basket.

I'm 99% the ridges in the clutch basket was causing most of the problems, anyway, it's all much better now, and it all works as intended. Going to first is always going to be a bit clunky on the VFR though, it's a 15 odd year old bike after all :D

What parts do I need to get? Just the friction plates?

I agree with everything that declangaelic says. I also had this problem and people on here told me to blip the throttle to 3k and find nuetral while doing so and it's fine works a treat, hopefully it can for your bike too! 8-)
