Hi, im in Australia and looking at picking up and Ethos full exhaust system for my NC35 RVF 400. For our noise and emissions, we arent allowed to have them here so all the Jap imports get them taken off and they sell them dirt cheap.

I have a couple of questions that i hope you can shed some light on:

1) Ive never installed a exhaust system on a bike before though im mechanically minded. Is it a simple instalation? As in remove fairings and current exhaust... twist in to place and bolt on? Or do many other things need to be taken apart to gain access?

2) performance wise... is there much difference? Will i need to re jet my carbs?

3) Sound wise if i go for a carbon fibre can: i have searched hi and low for sound bites but cant seem to find anything. How do they sound?

A

Give your exhaust studs a quick blast with an oxy acetylene torch to unseize them. Otherwise you risk them snapping off in the head and then you're in a world of trouble.

You will need a set of 4 gaskets too. I have a full Ethos system with a carbon can, I bought it for performance but it also sounds great (no clips of it though). You would be wise to have it set up properly or it will be poping and banging and running like crap.

You may need to re pack the can too, when I got mine it had no packing in at all (must have been LOUD!!) easy enough to drill out the pop rivets, re pack and pop rivet it back up.

Hi Cakeman, can you point me in the direction of some dirt cheap exhausts?

Putting a full exhaust system on can be a pain in the arse, it's easiest if you pull the shock off first. Putting a half system on is far easier, just give the bolts on the rear manifold a good spray with wd40 a day or so before.

A full exhaust system replaces the rear manifold, a half-system doesn't.

The performance difference between full and half systems is negligable on the road. Good half systems give a good increase to the midrange power. I've used yamamoto and lazer half systems, and also a hrc full system.

I prefer the sound of stainless mufflers over carbon (an Aussie made stainless Madaz muffler was the best sound I've ever heard!!), but each to their own.

Sumoto in melbourne were going to give me a second hand full system with can for $700.
Im in sydney.

If they give me the full system i guess i could just take my old system off from the rear headers back assuming the new system is seperated and has a bolt on section there. I might try that.

My problem is i have a dual can setup at the moment which is very old and needs replacing. So i need to go to a single can setup.

Whats the difference sound wise with carbon fibre vs stainless?

Will you be requiring the system you're removing? If not, I might be interested, any pics?

Would be easier to sell it to me... Cash waiting.

Depending on the condition of your system I'd do you a swap for a good half system with a carbon Ethos can or alloy HRC can.

I've had quite a few of each and prefer stainless, but the difference mostly comes down to condition of the muffler packing (glass wool), condition and also the bore of the muffler inner tube.

Alloy cans can sometimes sound a bit ringy and raspy IMO.


I'm in Northern Vic but get to Melbourne pretty often, happy to lend a hand if you get stuck. I also have all jets if you wanted to rejet your carbs to suit the exhaust, happy to do that for you also. PM me if interested.

id take you up on that offer if you were in sydney. Dont really want to get in to shipping etc to melbourne from sydney.

If you think alloy sounds raspy, why not go carbon?
