Under the seat (battery starter relay earth wire?!?!)
Hi
Sorry if this in the wrong section
I have a 3TJ model and my problems so far are:-
The battery was disconnected when i got the bike and under the seat there is an earth wire, where do i atacth this to battery negative terminal?
The bike wont turn over the relay is clicking (so i guess its foobarbed?) but upon inspection the positive wire is getting really hot and appears to have melted any ideas? i also have the battery on the optimate just incase it is flat so will see how goes tommorow
Thanks

The bike has a negitive earth so yes it goes to the negitive terminal on the battery. If the positive is getting hot you may have a bad connection or most likly a short. I would check to see if you have any bare wires touching the frame/engine. Also ckeck the wiring loom to see if any wires have fused together. The clicking sound your hearing could be the fuel pump. If it clicks a few time when you turn the bike on then stops thats the fuel pump.

Do you mean the starter solenoid ? it connects direct from the battery on a thick red wire.
If that's clicking then it sounds like the has the starter constantly running. It could be the starter button is stuck in or shorted. Try turning the ignition key on with the kill switch off.

Yea i do mean the solenoid sorry
Charged the bettery last night and connected it this morn there was a couple of clicks from the soleniod but then 5 or so pushes of the button it cranked :D:D:D and then the battery got drained and it stopped cranking
so im quessing when the battery gets low it heats the wire up due to the current

Check the main live through the bike before you continue sound's like theres a short and you don't want a fire
Battery sounds f*cked to me, but stick some jump leads on it and try again ... Halfords do some small croc clip jump leads for bikes which help in the restricted space. If you use a car you won't need the car's engine running.
But it could be a symptom of something else maybe the generator or the reg rec ... but you really need the bike running to test them with a volt meter.

Re: Under the seat (battery starter relay earth wire?!?!)
battery is fine it was new about november and has been disconnected since then due to a big end or crank problem (which is next on my list) need to get it running to listen to it has been kicking in but think it wants some fresh fuel really... the wire when the bike was craniking was fine =\ but started to warm up as the battery died and soleniod started to click but the bike will all be stripped down once it starts so ill check all the wires then and i think really ill replace the soleniod and the positive wiring at the battery terminal

If the bike is turning over then the solenoid is engaging and fine. You may have overlooked that the kickstand needs to be up for the bike to start. Just a thought.Holdup wrote:battery is fine it was new about november and has been disconnected since then due to a big end or crank problem (which is next on my list) need to get it running to listen to it has been kicking in but think it wants some fresh fuel really... the wire when the bike was craniking was fine =\ but started to warm up as the battery died and soleniod started to click but the bike will all be stripped down once it starts so ill check all the wires then and i think really ill replace the soleniod and the positive wiring at the battery terminal
You may want to drain the fuel and get some new stuff and check if you are getting a spark.

If the battery's being depleted so quickly then I'd say there's a short on the battery possative so sort that first.
The side stand can be down to start it but the bike needs to be in neutral

Re: Under the seat (battery starter relay earth wire?!?!)
Well it turns over but we found out why it doesnt start when it does start its only for 5 - 20 seconds so we started to strip it down remove exhaust etc when my dad goes "heres a bit of your engine casing" com rod has tried escaping and theres a hole in the engine casing, so we now know why it doesnt run, time to strip it down find whats salvageable and what we can get away with not replacing and the time to source another engine
Thanks for all your help
