NC24 running issues

Post by Pansy »

Hi, another topic I'm afraid

Bought an NC24 which had been sitting in somebody's shed for a good while, and so far given it a fair few new parts (battery, plugs, etc)

I've got it going once or twice now, after a little persuasion, but it will run seemingly okay for 2/3 minutes, and then die and not restart. If you remove the plugs at this point, they're soaking wet. The bike is spinning over fine on the electric start.

We're scratching out heads as to why it won't start after it was running perfectly well except not ticking over... :?

It also seems to have a non-standard regulator rectifier unit on it, as it has fins on it and some home-made brackets. The 3-wire connection on it was burnt, so I've connected them straight through as a temporary measure.
Will having a dodgy reg/rec unit on the bike cause it to run for a little while, and then stop?

Any advice/suggestions will be greatly appreciated - I really want this bike to get going :poke:

Ta,

I'd go for whipping the carbs off and getting them cleaned and sorted.

ALso - what state is the air filter in? If the plugs are geting a soaking that is not good and it is possibly running very rich.

Thanks for reply,
I've ordered another set of carbs, because the joint opinion in our garage was that they're likely to be knackered

Will keep updated if we get it sorted

Hi Katy

The running for a few minutes and then stopping sounds like the vacuum pipe isn't connected but then you say the plugs are wet which indicate the opposite. Did you try removing the plugs after it had run to check or did you keep trying to restart it before removing them?

Also you mention the three yellow wires to the rectifier, if I understand it, you've conected it to circumvent the rectifier? If so you'll likely blow fuses, lights and boil your battery :o , tell me I've misunderstood, please!!

Nah, don't worry ;)

Just got rid of the burnt housing for the plug, and connected the wires as they would be within the plug.

I may be a girl but I'm hoping I wouldn't mess up that badly  but you never know :D

Yeah, reckon the reason the plugs were so wet was because we were trying to get it started and it just wasn't firing. Didn't think to check them before I had a go re-starting it. Suppose it proves that there's fuel in there and everything though :)

But if it sounds like I'm doing anything dangerous/that's likely to kill the bike permanently I'd be very grateful for a friendly warning again please :scare:

thanks,
Katy

Good stuff, just thouht I'd make sure :D

Have you got the vacuum pipe connect properly then?

24s can be a real pig to start, my advice is full choke and don't go near the throttle for a good thirty seconds or so

Well, I've got a funnel for the fuel at the moment, as the tank is off so we can get to the plugs, etc

Am I right in thinking there's only one vacuum pipe? Because if it is, then its blocked off.

I did hear that you're not meant to use any throttle, and tried it with the NC... but to be honest without any it just doesn't want to know without using it. It only gets going if its the first time you've tried it that day, and if you give it full choke and some throttle... probably not doing it any good, though :?

The new carbs should be here by monday - so we'll whack them in and give it a go. I genuinely think (hope?) they might be the culprit

I just want the thing running for the start of May so I can give it a thrash round on a trackday... GRRR :D

Also if you are using a funnel for fuel then the vacuum pipe is irrelevant as it only works on the fuel tap. As above check the carbs are clean as the floats could be sticking shut only letting a small amount of fuel in overnight hence the short running time. Just a thought though as I'm no expert.
My nc24 has sat for over a year and I got it running two days ago (yippee) It took a while to get going too. I could not even get the starter to spin until I tapped the solenoid with the handle of a screwdriver, It worked, lol. Even then it took several attempts with choke on and off, throttle on and off, plugs out and cleaned etc. When it did go it smoked a bit for a while but soon cleared.
Heres an idea, try adjusting the idle screw when you get it started to give it some more revs.!
