Re: wont start and battery isnt charging
Measured the voltage across the battery before starting? Then with the engine running and lights on?

Re: wont start and battery isnt charging
first of all, check the voltage at the battery with the bike running @ 5000rpm.it should be between 13.5-15volts.14 is about average with a good charging circuit.
if there is no charge rate at all meaning the volts actually drop slightly and do not rise then the problem more than likely lies with the reg/rec.
if the volts do rise but hardly at all, then the alternator could be on it's way out.
out of curiosity, when you ride for a few miles is the battery fully charged before leaving?????the reason im asking is a fully charged battery will power your bike for a good whule so long as you dont use the lights,if you were using your lights and the charging system was faulty then it would not last as long.
i ran my bike a few yrs back with a faulty reg/rec and i could manage 50-60miles very easily before having to charge the battery.

Re: wont start and battery isnt charging
battery may be goosed.do the charge rate check first and see what the results are, then take it from there.

Re: wont start and battery isnt charging
may sound stupid but remove the strip across top of battery (the bit that says DO NOT REMOVE ) check fluid level in cells had simillar prob with mine start a couple of times then appeared flat leave for a while and would turn over again battery was bone dry if yours is like this as a temp measure fill cells with acid from an old battery and charge for a while then try again if better the only real option is a new battery (approx £30 check
local motor factors NOT HALFORDS etc

Re: wont start and battery isnt charging
It is most likely a "maintenance free" battery which when filled with acid originally it soaks into fibre matting and I think gels in place so there should not be any loose liquid inside? To be honest I do not know if prising it open and adding acid will do anything or not...
edit: oh yeah you said it is MF didnt you.

Re: wont start and battery isnt charging
being maintenance free is exactly that, you should never have to do anything to it.it does not mean however that the battery can never give up the ghost.
do you have a multimeter?
if so,do the voltage checks.
