New project underway
Hi all, I purchased a FZR 400 1991, Well that's would I believe its is. Had to tell from the engine number 1wg-043261 and the vin number is 6F9IMPORTSHPP0059.
The bike isn't in great shape and my intention is to take it back to showroom condition.
My first problem is working out exactly which model 400 its is. from the frame number is should be a FZR400 EXUP 3EN1(1988) but the Ram air inlets positioned below the headlights which should make it a FZR400R EXUP 3EN2 (1989). Then again the previous owner butchered the bike by adding;
• '98 YZF600 tank
• '03 R6 seats
• '02 R6 rear light
To make the ZFR600 tank fit he halved the size of the air box and sealed it up with ducktape and the ram air inlets now go nowhere. My problem is knowing exactly what I am missing.
Would some one be able to help with
1) figuring out which model I have?
2) provide a picture of an intact airbox so I can figure out the best solution?
I have included a like to some of the picture I have taking so far.

Thank again.

Re: New project underway
Hmmm - they made a mess of that bike huh ?
It's a 3en2 1989 - have a look at the pics in this album http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n44/ ... storation/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to get an idea of the bike. The air intakes always were dummy it's just for looks I'm afraid.
Airboxes are cheap enough on e-bay but the rubbers go hard and may need replacing with new parts. You might need a standard fuel tank ... it has the fuel pump attached underneath it. I've got a standard tank shroud for one of these if you want it.
It might be best to leave the rear alone, you'll need another subframe and then work out where to put all the electrics which is a lot of heartache.
Where abouts are you ? - I'm based in London and have one of these bikes if you want to have a look around it

Re: New project underway
Hi evilchicken0, Thanks for clearing that up, now I can start chasing down parts. I am in Newcastle ................................................ Australia. Would love to drop over but the airfare is a killer. I have an other tank cover but It seems to be from another model came with the bike. It has two tabs along the bottom edge which touched the frame. It was on the bike at some stage because two wear marks are on the frame were the tabs would be.

Do you have any idea which bike it belongs to ?
Finally got the bike started today its running very rich so will be stripping the carbies down tomorrow for a look.
Thanks again Evilchicken0 for the info and the invitation.
Happy riding

Re: New project underway
Thats the correct tank cover for the bike. they ues a plastic air box and a steel tank behind it, the tank cover bolts at the front, the filler cap and to the frame. There are horizontal slots where the rear panels clip in.
I'd clean the carbs and look for a standard airbox then see how it runs with that
can you load your other pics on photobucket - it's easier for me to use

Re: New project underway
Hi Evilchicken0,
I was just comparing your frame and mine.
Have a look at the two pictures I have just uploaded to photobucket. http://s718.photobucket.com/albums/ww188/buzzawak/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I have drawn a circle around the bit where the tab on the tank fits. On my frame the tube goes all the way so no mounting for the tab on the tank ???
Let me know what you think ?

Re: New project underway
My mistake the frame is 3en1 ... 1988. What does the top tripple clamp look like ?
If it's flat with the clipons under it's a 3en2 ... if it's not flat with the clipons above it's a 3en1.

Its day 3 of having my very own FZR400. Today was strip down and clean carbi day.
All went well until I got to the adjust float level part. My problem is I don't have a float chamber line
to measure 20.9- 21.9mm from ?????

See
Any ideas ????

Re: New project underway
Yes. due to the abgle of the carbs you have to use a U-tube and measure it against a line on the carb body. Have a look in the FZR General Section and follow a link to download a manual

there's a whole website dedicated to using this particular tool, I've never used it myself but it's all the rage amongst the kids - http://www.youtube.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Evilchicken0 wrote:Yes. due to the abgle of the carbs you have to use a U-tube and measure it against a line on the carb body. Re: New project underway
Thanks guys, Read the manual and know how to do the procedure problem is my carbies don't have a obvious mark on the float bowl to measure from.Evilchicken0 wrote:Yes. due to the abgle of the carbs you have to use a U-tube and measure it against a line on the carb body. The carbi are BDST32 from a SP. The SP manual says to measure 20.9 - 21.9 mm down from the float chamber line. Problem is I see no line.
