I had made valve clearance first time. Does anybody know why camshaft holder marked this way as in picture below.


Really I expected that I would be marked e.g. EXHAUST Camshaft left holder EXL, but it marked from left EXR-L, from right side - INL. Why ?

EXR/EXL = Exhaust Right/Exhaust Left

no idea what IN stands for, but all i can see is the last letter tells you if its L=Left or R=Right

IN mean - INLET. I think this holder is interchangeable part. Looks we have 2 maked as EXR/INR and two - EXL/INL. I think we can change them. Correct?

you could change them to what they should be.
Or then again if the engine was bought on flea bay, u never flipin know!

Thanks mate I have haynes manual. But I can find section where this mark on camshaft holder described (or I couldn't find). If you direct me which page number I will be really appreciate.

Its wrong.
if you sit on your bike, and look at the top of the engine, with the rocker cover of, you will have the inlets close to you (IN)
and the Exhaust (EX)furthest from you. they start from the left to the right, 1 2 3 4
that should be all u need to know.
its real easy to do so dont stress.
when you are pulling the rear wheel round or moving the mechanism to do the timing dont drop the engine cover gasket into the big nast cogs.

Sorry mate. You need to turn picture from up to down - this picture from haynes manual really. I have made valve clearance yesterday. Only measured clearance, but not changes shim yet.

The reason the camshaft holders are marked is because the camshaft bearings are machined directly in the head with the holders fitted, so they all become specificly matched and are NOT interchangeable.

I don't understand mate. Could you describe more detailed?

I think this is mentioned in the haynes manual somewhere. Due to production tolerances, there will be variations in the position of the bearings (only by a few thousandths of an inch), which are half in the head, half in the cap, so if you mix up the caps, there is a chance that the camshaft bearings will have more play or may sieze up or wear out more quickly; it's just not good...
