3TJ Engine in 1988 Exup FZR 400?

Hi There All,

This is my first post and I wanted to ask a question as I couldn't see the question anywhere else on the form.

Would a 3TJ engine fit in the 1988 Yamaha FZR 400 Exup? I'm not entirely sure if my Exup has the 1WG or the 3TJ engine.

Please help!

Thanks,

Leon.

I've actually just checked Wkipedia and it seems that the 1988 model takes the 1WG engine...

Would a 3TJ still fit or is the frame different on the 1989+ models?

Thanks.

The 3tj shares the same rear mounting points but the front mounts/cylinders are different. Not impossible to make it fit but you would be better off fitting a 600 engine which i think is a direct fit.

400RR is also a direct fit. Cases are have the same mounting points as the "normal" 400s. 400RR als have the mounting points in the front near the oil filter, but on the 400RR they are used to mount the fairingbrackets. You just dont need to use the top mounting points.

Now heres the confusing bit - all the engines are stamped 1WG there aren't any engine numbers ...

So why would you want the swap ??? There isn't enough of a performance difference to make it a worthwhile swap.

Does it take ages to start ???

The reason why I'm looking to swap out the engine is because it's damaged due to someone putting 5 litres of oil in it

The engine fails to tick over at all and the mechanic thinks it might be more economic to get a new engine than to check it over.

Would a 600 engine affect the weight or balance of the bike in any way? Would it increase the performance as well?

Thanks

Hybrids are the shit!

400's with big engines kick ass :)

Bearing in mind I'm gonna let my mechanic do this if I fit this because my skills are rather lacking.

A hybrid would be very cool but what am I looking at time wise to fit the engine plus additional items?

An FZR600 engine (be sure to get a 3HE FZR600 engine, not one from the FZR600R) won't be much more work that sticking in an FZR400RR engine. You can use the FZR400 loom, FZR400 headers, FZR400 clocks and even the FZR400 CDI (just be carefull with the rev limiter). What you need is the FZR600 engine, carbs and a dremel to mod the FZR400 airbox a little, don't really need to acctually.

If you have a good engine and a good mechanic it should technically be a weekend's worth of work.
