v4 engine novice

hi, i do hope someone out there can shed some light on this situation! after a few drinks down the pub i bought off a friend a 1990 nc30 it had been stood for about four years after a bit of work ( new battery, plugs ) she turned over was a bit smokey but i would expect that after four years.

the strange thing now is she wont start, i turned the ignition on as usual, presses the starter she tried to turn over then but wouldn't. Gave her a few seconds tried again and still nothing, then the third time i tried i just heard a click and then nothing no signs of life...i have checked all fuses, the battery voltage and looked for any lose bad connections. When i bought the bike it came with an extra loom so i have even tried that.

the battery is reading about 11 - 12 volts when i put a meter across it. Even stranger is if i connect a set of jump leads from the car to the battery ( no engines running ) just to give an extra bit of juice sometimes there will be ignition lights some times not if there is it still wont fire, even if i press the horn you can barely hear it?

does any one have any thoughts? also if anyone has any manuals etc as i am totally working blind at the mo, i have never worked on a v4 engine before. i also own a 929 blade so i know my way fairly well around honda's but this small little engine is really stumping me!

Take the regulator from the Blade, plug it into the VFR (if they are compatible, but most Honda R/R's are) and try that. The R/R's are good for shitting themselves.

i will have have a check in a mo, i dont think they are compatible between the two bikes. i have heard the regulators can be a bit lousy on these but is that likely to cause the elctrics to trip out like this?

ok looking at the one on my blade and checking ebay they should both be compatible, this i wont be able to fully check until sunday when i im next off. if this does not appear to be the problem does anything else spring to mind? i have heard the rectifiers can cook themselves as they have no fins or anything to cool them down like the one on my blade. I bought it on a bit of a wim, but have always wanted one as i have heard they are a lot of fun hopefully i will be able to find out once i can get this sorted.

Sounds like the battery is dead.. can you try another - not in parallel with the dead one?

Good arrows on the V4 - they are the law...

We will see it right for you matey..

fully charge the battery off the bike, then after you put it back in start the bike and see what the charge rate at the battery is @5000rpm??????

if the voltage does not rise and possibly goes down ever so slightly then it is very possible the reg/rec is faulty.

i would do this first before buying a new reg/rec or replacing it.

ok the battery is no more than four weeks old, it reads 11 - 12 volts when sat on or off the bike. i can't test the voltage at 5000rpm because she will not start, as i said she did run then a couple of days later nothing!

i pressed the starter and it just went 'click' and no electrics as if a fuse had blown but all fuses are present and corect. i did notice the reg/rec was warm to the touch, if it is the regulator would a faulty one cause a complete failure of all electrics? if it does then in theory a working one would get everything working again...

Might sound silly, but i take it you cleaned out the old petrol etc before firing it up the first time?!

yep, all carbs stripped cleaned and rebuilt, fresh fuel put in when she fired 2 weeks ago, since she has not started since i have changed fuel encase that was causing a issue, but it seems more of a electrical instead of fuel issue.

Fuel vacumn pipe fitted, and fitted to the right place on the tank (3 o'clock position).

Maybe some jump leads to a car might help with starting..

usual starting method..

1. Choke on
1a. No throttle
2. Kill switch to on
3. Press start button
4. Leave alone till warm
