speedo slowly died on me on the motorway...

Took my bike on its first trip to uni and back today.. went up the a217 on the way this morning for some practice filtering during the rush hour and then came back via the a3 and m25.. On the last stretch on the m25 the needle in my speedo started to drop slowly all the way to zero! Turns out its broken..
I have read through a couple of threads on this... and found that the usual culprit is a plastic gear? at the end of the wire by the gearbox casing..
I didn't have time to check this out today but will do it tomorrow to figure out if its this or not.. Hopefully it is and its not the actual speedo... How much is a new wire with plastic gear on the end and where would be the best place to get one?
Thanks in advance peeps!

Assuming it's an NC23, where the speedo cable meets the gearbox there is a small screw which fixes the end of the cable in the speedo drive on the gearbox. Remove the screw and withdraw the end of the cable. It is then fairly obvious how it works and if the problem is at that end or further up.

unless its already solved Ive had to take the whole cable off and if you simply spin the bottom and watch the top to see if it moves will tell you if its the cable. if this is fine (which mine was) i then put bottom back on and taped top to handlebar and drove slowly in my culdersack and watched to see if spinning, if there has been no problem so far then you've isolated the glitch to the speedo.

cheers for the advice..
I removed the casing where the cable is screwed into to check the cable was snapped.. it is and the plastic gear appears to be fine..
I have one problem though.. I cant get the screw out of the casing... any tips? Probably taking it to my local bike shop to see if they can get it out..
Got a new cable for 10er from wemoto in brighton.. need any bike parts? check out

tip 1 put grease on every bolt you ever undo on your bike = easy to undo even years later.
tip 2 do not over tighten things. i work on a principle that if *I* can tighten it. *I* can undo it. i do not let anyone else tighten my axial, brake and fairing bolts.

Had same problem with mine after getting screw out i replaced it with a counter sunk allen screw with plenty of copper grease on threads. always easy to remove.

tip 3- the knob that resets the trip has a small Philip screw. to get to this 1st spray WD40, leave for an hr or so. get a small eye glass screwdriver and its deep down inside.
