400 bandit carbs

Post by turbopresh »

i am desperately searching for a new set of carbs for the mates 400 bandit. as far as i can tell the carbs in his bike atm are from a gsxr 400, which i have been assured should work. but, well they just dont lol. the bike runs fine on the the carbs from my 400 bandit, but just wont start with the other carbs. i have dismantled and clean them thoroughly ensuring i clean every passageway using carb cleaner and compressed air. i noticed a few indents on 3 of the main jets, looks like part of the outside below where the holes are on the main jet has broken off. are these meant to be there?

i also noticed the bowls of the carbs have been badly eroded by whatever petrol was left in them when the bike was set up. 2 of the needles seem to have started corroding aswell.

anybody have a set of carbs that will suit or tips on what to do with the existing carbs.

I'm not sure if the gsxr 400 carbs work on the bandit 400, but in any case it sounds like those you got are on the way out! I'd say the best option would be to keep an eye on eBay for a set; there a few being broken on there at the moment, so I'd get in touch with the sellers and see how much these would cost! Post on the For Sale/Wanted section too; you might get lucky.
Rick Oliver or Graeme France on here might be able to help too?

Hi guys.
I have sourced a new set of carbs as mine were physically broken, mangled by a butcher
I suspect, but I see they have different jet sizes, can
someone please let me know what they should be. The pilots both seem to be 32.5, but
the mains are 100 on one set and 95 on the other. Also what should the float level
be set to ? I also see the mixture screws are different between the 2, how many
turns out should they be.. ?

Thanks for the help.

Cheers

The Gsxr carbs should work as a carb is not a specific part ie they are mikuni not Suzi and are supplied to all manfacturers. They sound like they are in a bad way.
Regarding Beemerboys question the larger jets are first gen and the smaller jetted carb is second gen B4.

Hey, I've got a set of carbs off my old Bandit 400V. I'm breaking the whole bike also. PM me if you've interested and we'll sort something out.

Thanks.

on my '91 400 bandit i have a race can and a k&n filter and it is recommended to use the 100 jets, with a standard can they recommend 96 jets. i hope this is helpful.

Cool so far.
The bike was a non runner when I purchased it with
butchered carbs and hacked wiring,
I've managed to get her running pretty decently
although I still need to balance the carbs,
What I have found is that she wont rev past
4000 rpm. Everything else seems good.
Any advise welcome.....

Unbalanced carbs shouldnt stopp revving past 4. How warm have you let her get? Leave i idling till the fans kick in then try revving her. If not maybe valve clearances.

Thanks Mike.
Problem sorted, moved needle clips to middle position,
they were in the top groove.
So now thats resolved, I have only one more issue.
Will start a new thread though.
Thanks again.

Well the bike is running fine still, although I did
need to drop in a set of rings.
But she is running very rich. I can smell
it when shes running, and also getting 200kms
from a full tank is a mission.
I have checked choke is closing properly.
Float levels appear to be ok, and none of the
carbs is visibly flooding.
Main jets are 100
Pilot jets I think are 37.5
Mixture screws are 2,5-3 turns out
Needle clip is in middle position.
Throttle response and all round performance is good.
Any ideas ?
I'm thinking go 95 on mains and drop needles one
clip position, although when I ran there before she
battled to pick up past 4000 rpm.
I can also drop float levels
Carbs are not my forte unfortunately.
