FZR400/600 Gearing

Hi all. I have just fitted a 600 motor into my 3tj. I took it for its first shakedown at cadwell but the gearing is wrong as i wasn't getting up to 6th on park straight. I am running a 520 chain. I went up 1 tooth from the std 400 front sprocket.
Other than that and the clutch slipping the bike was sweet.

Hi, seen your thread in PB forum - lurvly bike!
Dunno if this helps - May be trying to teach grandma to suck eggs, but here goes....
http://www.yamaha-motor.hu/designcafe/e ... 94-FZR600R
This site shows the final drive ratio for a 94 600r as 3.13 where as a 3tj1 has a final drive ratio of 2.89....
If the sprockets on your 3tj were stock (19/55 apparently) you'd need to go down 2 teeth on the front and 2 on the rear to get the bike back to roughly stock 600 gearing. 3 teeth down on the front would be easier though right

Dunno if that would be any good round a track though. Would it be better to go for an even higher ratio and loose some top end in exchange for pick up?
Cheers,
Graeme.

Nice to see you at Cadwell.
Don't know about your gearing, but I guess you want to be a tad lower huh ???

Nice to see you too! Might try the 520 front recommended for the 400 and see how that fairs

Depends what your plans are for the bike - if your going to race it then you want lightness. If your going to use it as a track bike then you have to temper it all with some economics and a 520 is probably the way to go.
Interestingly the new Hyabusa runs a 520 ... and when my Bimota needs a new chain and sprokets I'll use a 520 over the standard 535. Time and technology have moved on since the Bim was built

Hi, did you get a set up that worked for you?
I was at Cadwell on Thursday with my 400/600 and had the opposite problem - ran out of revs half way down the straight.....
My gearing is currently 15 / 45 by the way....
