Battery discharging

Post by savfr »

Hi i have replaced my alternator on my vfr 400 nc 30 . I had a problem with the battery not charging and checked the stator and it was burnt. The reg/rec seemed fine. The bike charges within the correct specs 14.2 volts @ 5000rpm.
As soon as i switch the lights on the battery drains quickly . The voltage drops. The charge keeps dropping.???

hello-
first of all i believe your reg/rec is in perfect working order, the fact your battery is getting a charge(with no lights)and as much as 14.2 volts@5000rpm would indicate the reg rec doing it's job correctly.

for the battery to be receiving 14.2 volts then the alternator must be working

when you put the lights on @5000rpm what is the charge rate?how fast does it drop?

have you experienced any problems out and about e.g,does the bike die after a certain amount of time?and have you had the battery go dead?

It could be that your reg/rec was popped while your stator was dying or that the battery has been killed and can't hold the charge/demand. It is puzzling that it holds 14.2V @ 5k rpm. Does the reg/rec get excessively hot when the lights go on? Also have you disturben any of the wiring at all?

The reg/rec does not get hot . If i keep the revs @ 5000k and switch the lights on the voltage drops at about 1 volt per 10 seconds thats at the battery.
I did the light mod on the bike about 1 year ago (relay for the up sized bulbs) Its the only electrical mod i've done , i also replaced my battery about 2 months ago , because it was not charging, when the stator was faulty. I did notice when i charged the battery it made a loud hiss bubble sound.

Sounds like your battery is broken.

what did you charge it with?
