I have been offered a 1994 Jap import CB400SF for £600. It's covered 16k miles, although the speedo is still in KPH.
It is also currently fitted with a 33bhp restrictor kit which I would want to remove.
All the obvious things look to be OK, however it is in need of a new seat and some TLC. Would I be buying a whole heap of trouble?
Thoughts, advice muchly welcomed!

If it's a clean original example, you've checked it over thoroughly and ridden it and all seems OK, then I wouldn't expect too much trouble from it; it's a Honda after all!

Bear in mind though that it's a 14 year old bike, so don't expect it to be trouble free!

I bought my '95 Version R last winter, and it was pretty much faultless once I'd fixed a couple of things.

If you haven't owned a Super Four before; they're great fun to ride, practical and cheap to run, and they're very reliable.

Make sure that the it doesn't jump out of second gear though.

Has it done a true 16,000 miles (as the clocks are in KMs make sure the odo reads miles and not KMs), seems very low for a 14 year old bike, just check it hasn't been round the clock once, The seat should be easy to reshape and recover, I got mine done recently for not too much money (a lot less than trying to buy a new seat!). Otherwise if it all run fine, rides fine and looks good then I can't see you having too many problems with it! Good luck and let us know how you get on. :D

I got mine recovered at a local car upholsterers. They mainly do work on classic cars, and even had a light aircraft in for re-upholstering, but that meant they had a massive range of materials on the shelf I could paw and decide on. I went for: raising seat by 1&1/2", basket weave with red trim and gel pad fitted. Total cost £90ish.

Thanks for your help. Will keep you posted, but the deal on the bike I was hoping to get has fallen through. The seller turned out to be a bit of a chump!
