Speedos

Hi all,

Nothing to do with the swim wear you'll be glad to hear

I've managed to get hold of a GSXR front end which i plan to graft onto my 3tj. The only down side is the lack of any provision for a speedo drive on the wheel.

Anyone got any idea of how to get around, under or over this problem?

Cheers, Graeme.

fzr_nut has '99 R6 clocks fitted to his 3TJ so he would be the fella to ask.

I wouldn't mind knowing how he did it myself.

You need to rig a pick up usually on the front sprocket it counts the number of revolution and multiplies it by the gear ratio to give a speed.

Of course gear indicators work on the same principle measuring the revs/speed to calc the gear ratio. You might be able to use the speed sensor on one of those kits, they count a magnet attached to a disc bolt

PS - You'll need a derstriction box or unresticted CDI

Sorry long post
It's really not that hard to do.
Firstly u need the clock's and headlight wiring harness.
I used r6 clocks but the tach is off by half u need to double the pulse http://www.vtac.co.uk/tacho.htm.
I've since been told r1 clock's dont have this problem lol.
I sure u could use just about any digital clocks tho.
As evil said u'll need a bdk or 4dx cdi unit.
I found a 4dx one at a price i couldn't refuse so i went that route.
Next u'll need the wiring diagrams for both bikes to match up the wireing for the rev counter, temp gauge etc.
Then u'll need to make a mount for the clock's and speed sensor i mounted mine so it reads off the front sprocket.
Wire everything up and thats pretty much it really.
Some pics here http://www.400greybike.cc/newforum/view ... ?f=36&t=71
Let me If u need any more help.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice guys!

fzr_nut, I have some questions :?
(Nice pics in the gallery BTW :D )
u'll need a bdk or 4dx cdi unit
Is that to get over the speedo cut out/restrictor switch thingumy? ...I may, and i really stress the *mayness* of this, be able to wire that out of the ciruit (By spliting the clock and keeping the cut out reed switch / resistor circuit or whatever is doing business as part of the loom)
Then u'll need to make a mount for the clock's and speed sensor i mounted mine so it reads off the front sprocket
Did you get a yamaha sensor from an R1/6 loom or will any do? Were there any problems with cabiration of the speedo?

Cheers, Graeme.

The bdk or 4dx cdi unit's aren't restricted I tried playing with the wiring but nothing i could think of would solve the problem.
The restriction seems to be in the cdi unit itself without it the bike wont rev past 12500 rpm.
I used the sensor from a 2005 gsxr1000 mounted behind the sprocket cover it was the easiest to make fit.
Any sensor should work i'll post some pic's of how its mounted at the weekend.
The speedo reading will be out so u'll need a speedo healer to fix that.

Have u got front end fitted yet?
Post some pics let us see lol

Sound. That'd be good thanks.

I need to send my spare fzr stem and gsx yokes over to nkracing to get them mated (nobody will touch it over here - pussies!) before i do anything. Also, need to get a front wheel - more £££'s

I'm gonna try and do photos of the whole swap if possible, but it probably won't be finished much earlier than the end of june (I'm of on hoilday week after next). Figured i'd get the speedo sorted now so that it all works for when the front end goes on :D

And how i mounted it.
I really need to make time to clean it out lol.

I had to modify the cover by cutting off the rear mounting.

Good luck with yours :D
