Hi there,

Want to balance my carbs. Got the vacuum gauges, got the haynes manual, thought i was all set.

This fucking manual honestly.... I'm wondering where the screws are where you connect the vacuum gauges... do you have to remove the fuel tank? Remove air filter? Remove that black plastic tray as well? The manual does not tell you any of this...

So bloody confusing...

Can anyone give me any tips please.

You have to pull off the side panels, leave the tank ect on.

You get at them in the Vee under the carbies through the sides, shine in there with a torch and you will see the screwson the heads next to the carbie rubbers, the adaptor on the right rear cylinder is already there and is used for the vacuum fuel tap.

thanks for the speedy reply.

I have since located the screws that one turns to adjust the carb balance- but still no luck in finding the bloody screw hole for attaching the vacuum gauges! The manual gave no clue on where to look, by fluke i spotted em while looking into the 'V'.

jon- you say the adaptor on the right rear cylinder is already there and is where the fuel tank vacuum tube attaches to. That's very useful info. it is dark now but tomorrow when i have another look... will i find that the other carbs have their adaptor screws in the same position where that ''vacuum tubed'' cylinder has it's adaptor?

Damn i already took the tank and all off... oh well i guess i can clean my air filter out now!

1. Oh and how the feck do you adjust those carb balancing screws!!!?? seemingly impossible to even touch, let alone turn. Is their some kind of screw driver you guys use??

2. How do you get the vacuum gauge adaptors into the holes.. given the amount of room to work in that V??

3. How do you not lose the adaptor screws in the V when taking them out to put the vacuum gauges in?

so many questions .....

first off if your going to balance the carbs with the guages your going to need one of those 90 degree screwdrivers,i heard they were like £20 or something ....fuck that....

2nd, whats the story then,you found one of the 4 screws (well 3 but i'll explain in a second) but to make this go alot easier i think we need pictures

the front right cylinder is beside the thermo stat, the front left is in behind the coil just below where the carb clamps are and the left rear up in behind where the choke lever is,it;s a bit of a tight one this when you disconnected the fuel tap you took off two pipes right ?
one big thick one and one small skinny one ?
if you trace the small one down to the right cylinder you've find it connects to the head via a brass nipple that is the 4th "screw".

once you find the 4 screws come on back and let us know if you get stuck at anything else

Hey royster81 thanks for the help and pics. Thanks to that i've now found the points and have attached my gauges. Ran into some difficulty as the tank vacuum tube broke when trying to take it off number 3 carb. god knows how i managed to get the remaining bit off. Just waiting for my air filter to dry out and get it all back together to see if it works!

I don't have a special screw driver or anything... so i'll have to go out and get one today. i noticed though... probably going to need a fucking gigantic screw driver to get to those adjustment screws. How do you guys get in there? from the right hand side of the V with some gloves on ???

Most people use a 90 degree screwdriver to get to the adjusting screws.

The screws you want to adjust are these ones;


The base Carburetor is #2 (Left front), adjust all the rest to equal that one.

Can't seem to find a bloody 90 degree screw driver that's not in some poxy set!! It's always these things that trip you up isn't it!

Will have to somehow make one.
