Stupid question time again,
I downloaded the workshop manual for the vfr400, am currently trying to get te carbs off (bugger won't start so am going to try and clean the carbs), anyway, apart from the 4 screws fixing the carbs to the intake rubber manifolds on top of the engine, is there anything else i need to unscrew to get them off?
I did everything else in the manual, just seems to be stuck fast, i don't want to break anything by using brute force.

Other than the 4 clamps you just need to take the idle adjuster out of its housing and remove the choke cable. They do get stuck on the boots so a carefully placed screwdriver will help pop them off. You might find you'll need some new boots though as the old ones might have hardened or cracked.

have you got the haynes manual?
if so and you have followed everything and removed all necessary parts then just give them a good yank........if they are hard to remove then that is a good sign of them being seated very well.

you have to remove the choke cable,throttle cables(but these can be done after removal but don't walk away with carbs in hand until you have undone them),and remove the idle screw adjuster from its housing.
if you have loosened of the clamps that are on the intake rubbers then job done!!!!!

Hello once again boys and girls,
So, wedged the carbs off, took a fair bit of effort but got them off. The rubber seats for the carbs look fine, obviously all the condomoids have survived
Next question is.....
Float hieght. Service manual says 6.8mm, but doesn't seem to mention from where to where. Will need to source the haynes manual seeing as i plan to keep the veefer for a while but in the mean time hoping someone round here will help me out.

Anyway, carbs are a disaster. Took me 3 hours and i've only managed to clean the outside and the first carb, bearing in mind that washing down the outside with carby cleaner to a total of 5 mins, i'm in for another 7 hours of work to clean the last 3 carbs out!!!
I've fixed up a few bikes in my time but never seen anything like this. Rock solid deposits!!!
Anyway, my girlfriend left me last night so leaves me with alot of time to work on the bike

have another look at the manual,im pretty sure it mentions how to measure the float height!!!!

I don't think it does.


As for the carbs, you don't really need to clean the outside too much as long as all the linkages move, remove the float bowls and make sure inside their is clean and you can blow compressed air through all the passagways.

Float heights a doddle anyway if you know what your doing... a vernier caliper with a depth gauge is the easiest...

You measure from the gasket surface of the carb



Turn the carbs the right was up and then start to turn them over until the float drops into the bowl and pushes the needle closed.. if you look at the needle you'll see a little springey thing in there, you don't want that to be pushed in.

The picture shows the distance frome the surface to the top of the float, which your measring.. in that pic its about 16mm.. you want yours to be 6.8mm

On which page? I've just been through the service manual and couldn't find it in general maintainance or fuel system?
