I have just bought a 1990 NC29 after wanting one from when I was a teenager, possible midlife crisis!

I paid £600 from a breaker as a bit of a project and a cheaper form of transport than my car. It is a mixed bag of good and bad things. Some one has looked after it as it has just had an oil, brake fluid and coolant change but has some not so good bits. I think it has been used a track day bike as the tyres are showing wear on the edge but not the middle. It has been down the road minus it's rider as the engine and frame are scratched and is missing its lower fairings.

The plan is to start getting it back to a mint bike one step at a time starting with mechanicals and fairing.

Right my questions

1: What size are the bolts on the engine cover (where the dipstick is) as one of the bolts has threaded and I need to get a helicoil set to match.

2. I am struggling to find second hand NC29 fairings on ebay and other sites, so I am looking maybe for the CBR 600 fairing as discussed on this forum. What year/model do I have to look for?

Many thanks for your help with this, you have already helped as I have been looking at the forum for a couple of weeks now. I will post pics of the bike if anyone is interested and keep it updated as I slowly get jobs done.

PS. I am on a credit crunch budget hence the second hand fairing.

m6 is the size for the bolts and most of the others on a 29, get a set off ebay, i did but only needed a few and have found handy for spares. good luck on a shoestring for 600 fairings, most go for the rr series don't know exact year but the pointed nose with point on side rather than curving down, about 02/03 onwards. this conversion is a lot of work, see some of the postings regarding the subject, with all the alterations to nose for lights etc aswell as rear subframe are the major points by the looks of it. a set of fairings very rarely comes up on ebay and when they do (ive only seen 3-4 in the last year, complete that is) come up they ll go for 150 plus. buying seperate can get costly due to most ebay sellers charging stupid money for postage, i was in same situation bought bike for 350, no fairings but had mot and tax no damage tho, ended up getting plastic nose and uppers but fibreglass lowers and painting my own style. toss up for tradition versus being able to fiddle about with colors/style etc and not worry about damage.

Will start looking at previous posts and keep checking ebay, as well as saving for a complete set if it comes down to it.

I am just spending the time at the moment changing/servicing mechanicals. Did the forks tonight, no where near as hard as I thought.

Welcome to the site first of all. Panels do come up on ebay from time to time, you just have to be patient. Im not a big fan of the 600rr style on the 29, just doesnt look right to me. Only my opinion though! Get some pics up so we can see what you have. If you want original panels theres a guy on here that has lots of panels, not sure hed have a full set and they wont be mint. But if you get a full set and fancy doing some plastic repair work and having them resprayed, that could be a way to a "mint" bike. Oh where in the uk are you by the way?

I think you are right about the 600 style, it looks to high at the back, just my opinion though. I am hoping to keep it standard with panels but will do something a little different with colour. Do you know the name of the guy with the panels or does someone on the site have an old set lying around?

I am really busy with work at the moment and I will get cracking in January just trying to get all the various parts I need so I do not spend to much time waiting for bits to arrive. Will post some pics soon.

Blacks bike salvage have got NC29 fairings in various conditions and colours hanging up in the shop, if you ring them they might say they aint got any (when they have) so best bet is to just go over its only in burscough

Thanks for the tips but have now sourced a full fairing. I got it from the parts for sale section on the forum. I think they are oem as they have the foam inserts on the inside but are sprayed badly in horrible yellow and will require some repair but are in good condition overall.

Starting to get all the bits together to commence work in Jnauary.
