Should the dipstick be screwed in when checking engine oil level or should it be resting on top of the threads?

The only user manual I can find is for the later model with a little window.

People say the level should be done with the dipstick unscrewed, I personally screw mine in 1/4 of a turn to make sure it's seated correctly so it going in straight at the angle it's supposed to.
