Forks through the top yoke

So I overhauled the forks this weekend and noticed that the circlips that locate the stanchions into the handlebars were missing

This meant I needed to estimate how far to push the fork tops through the top yoke (I did too good a job of removing the lines of corrosion indicating the position on the bottom yoke)

I settled on 5mm of fork tube as measured from the flat surface of the fork top bolt to the surface of the top yoke

Have I turned my NC into a tank slapping horror or the bikde in easy rider?

Anyone got any standard specs?

Hi, I think the fork tops are supposed to sit flush top of the yoke. But I had mine dropped thru about 5mm, didn't seem to make much difference.

You understand the purpose of the circlips so what is the problem?

I assume he wants to know the measurements so he can locate his forks to the right place without having to track down some circlips.

How hard can it be to align the circlip groove with the underside of the triple clamp?

The underside of the clamp is recessed to accommodate the circlips. So without measuring the recess depth it's impossible to know for sure how far past the circlip mark to push the forks up... Without unbolting every thing dropping the legs out, and measuring the recess.

It is not recessed beyond the thickness of the circlip. It is only a production convenience to aid the in assembly of the forks into the triple clamp. No measurement needed just butt the circlip against the underside of the triple clamp.

he doesnt have the circips

i cant remmber off hand but i think the circlips do sit in a recess in the top bridge and dont just sit flush, hence asking the original question.

As a temporary measure providing nobody gives you any measurements coulnd't you just wrap a bit of wire around the grove where the circlip sits and push it up until it stops, this will give you the right measurement.

I measured mine as I have the clips installed. I got almost 5mm so I believe you are spot on. My yoke is powder coated as well, I think you are safe with the 5mm.

Oh, my measurement is to the top of the fork stanchion, and did not include the thickness of the top nut.
