Neutral warning switch / light

Post by ripzay »

Hi All

Fixing my bike up ready for me and one thing that's niggling me at the moment, when i got the bike, the neutral warning light didnt work, - so i took of the clocks to find the bulb was missing - good, i thought, and put a new bulb in there.

This wasnt the problem, so my next port of call is whatever turns this bulb on / off - but i dont know where to look, my obvious guess is that its on the gearbox somewhere but i cant see anything down there really and as i have the fairings all off atm for a service i would rather get it fixed so i dont hav eto pull them all off again.

anyone else had the problem and know where i should be looking? or could point me at a diagram for where the switch is, or anything else that might cause this problem.

Thanks

Appears i may have found part of the problem.

There is a green / yellow wire as part of the circuit which goes to the CDI unit; however, the CDI unit in my bike is NOT meant for my bike, and this wire is not connected.. does anyone know what this wire does in the original CDI unit - i may be able to make something to replicate what it does by some other means.

Thanks!

I have identified the problem as part of the circuit i have marked in the diagram below.

as i said in my previous post, the CDI unit in my bike isnt the OEM equipment, it has one less wire than my bike has in its loom, this being the green / yellow wire, which is currently disconnected and taped up.

Any help identifying what and where are the two units i have circled would be greatly appreciated.

what you should do is run your bike 1-3rd gear about 10-12000 rpm it should feel like it pulls the same 4-6th if it feels like the power fell off then you need to get the right stuff if it still feel like 1-3rd then leave alone as your bike is derestricted and someone went through the effort of fixing it. find a auxiliary hot wire route it through the switch and to the bulb...

Right, [prepared to be corrected!] think the two bits you've circled are the side stand switch (lower of the two) and the starter relay,
Side Stand kill switch is on the side stand bracket and the relay is under the seat, all linked into your side stand to stop you starting it in gear with the side stand down, or setting off with the SS down.

Hmm, does anyone know where the switch on the gearbox is that tells the CDI which gear the bike is in ? and also, what voltage is on the green/yellow wire when the bike is in neutral, compared to when it isn't.. if someone could test this for me i would be extremely grateful.

Thanks

The switch is on the L/H side of the gearbox, behind the sprocket cover, forward of the sprocket spindle.
look for a small plastic thingy filled with sealant (white) and held on with two x-point screws. It's got two wires running from it (loomed) that goes up the frame and onto the subframe, with all the other plugs.

Incidentally it tells the CDI what gear you're in as well as neutral.

Hope that helps

The two things circled are side stand relay and diode (Small circle)

I had a problem on mine where the Neutral light was on all the time it turned out the diode had corroded up and shorted the circuit.

could someone please identify which item on the wiring diagram is the gear selector switch ? i'm going to work out if this even still serves a purpose on my bike with its non-standard CDI. if not i'm going to use it to drive a display to tell me which gear i'm in :)
