GK76 piston rings and gaskets

I've recently bought my first GSXR 400 and after some digging it's currently having it bores honed and i'm in search of some new piston rings, head and base gaskets. Suzuki have quoted me about £280 for the lot but I believe I have found the correct parts for £203 from ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUZUKI-GSX-R4 ... 2c6c7e610d

I have also found new gaskets for £20 a piece not OEM for a GSf400 which I believe to be the same?

Piston rings I have also sourced at £100 for a GK73 but I need some clarification on ring size.Ive tried measuring mine and I believe them to be 0.8mm, 0.8mm and 1.5mm oil ring yet the quoted dimensions for the GK73 rings are 0.8mm, 0.8mm and 2mm.
Can anyone clarify what size the rings should be on a GK76 and any suggestions on where to source some from?

Any help would be great
Dan

Hi
Do you have the head off the bike?
Best download the parts books off this site and basically if the part numbers are different for say a gasket it will generally be because there are differences.
You should be able to measure the old rings that you take out if its still together I can find an old set out and measure for you.
Regarding head gasket I have an old bandit one so id you post up a picture of the old one I can compare to see of the cut-outs are the same.

The oil ring on mine is currently 1.5mm thick which I have been told is correct for the GK76 unlike the older GSXR's and bandits that have a 2mm thick oil ring. My current options are to pay the £54 a piston for rings from Suzuki or machine my pistons to accept a 2mm oil ring and buy non OEM rings which will cost me £120 in total. I have also been told that someone has 442cc kit for sale but I'm still waiting on a price.

With regards to the gaskets I have seen pictures of both and they look the same and I have seen adverts for a GK76 gasket set that quotes the part number of the bandit gasket which does differ to the GK76 number. So I think it should fit but it would be interesting to know if anyone has used one?

Had a quick dig and gaskets are all coming up the same part number so anything gsxr 73 on or bandit will be ok.

With regards to the rings 76a has different part number that will be the oil ring difference

I will measure up the bandit oil ring as I'm thinking the actual rings will be the same and the difference in width will be the spacer (I hope) if so you could use the new rings and swap the old spacer over.
I will also check if the top rings are plain or tapered but will be tomorrow before I can get a micrometer.

Found a piston, was hanging around on the top of the freezer, haha
and top rings are plain and 0.8mm but the oil ring is not 2mm its 1.5mm
made up of a 0.7mm oil ring and two 0.4mm scraper rings.

They are 2mm deep but not 2mm thick.
Ive taken this out of a bandit and assume it is oe, ive others from a different engine and will check tomorrow as they are not at home.

That's great thank you.

That piston meets the same description as mine but I thought the bandit had a 2mm thick oil ring but apparently not. I don't want to machine my pistons if I'm going to struggle to find 2mm thick oil rings in future. I better try do a bit more digging but if you could check your other pistons(if you can access them easily) that would be much appreciated.

So i was talking bollocks before when i said the piston ring part numbers are different,
piston numbers are different but piston ring numbers are the same.

gsxr 73a-12140-32C10
gsxr 76a-12140-32C10
bandit 75a-12140-32C10

so any ring set should work and who ever says the B4 has 2mm oil ring is wrong, ive checked these numbers in the Jap parts book and the UK book.

There's a seller on ebay that does a full set of 4, he,s in Japan but not difficult to get them sent over.

OK well that clears things up, at least I know I should get the right rings. Thank you for your help, I better get some on order.

piston rings be aware that buying on ebay if you r paying about 30 quid a set which i see on ebay or go on aliexpress .com
the depth of these rings is .010 inch less than the standard rings
piston ring grove width =1st and second ring .032-.033 inch
oil scraper ring .059-.060 inch

Now then depending on the market these ring where aimed at ther can be a difference in thickness DONT ASK ME WHY.
IF U R GOING FOR THESE CHEAP CHINA RINGS DO NOT BUY u will lose your compression cos when set in the bore the piston ring grove gap will come no where near .018 gap when fitted in the bore at the bottom of the barrel and checked with a feeler gauge

if you have bought already check this messurment first before fitting
now when you are fitting these rings mod the two outside barrels by grinding a radius down to the chamfer point at the bottom of the barrels only cos the piston doesnt get down to see this area of skirt
this is so you can fit the 2 inner pistons onto the con rods with rings.
and fit pistons into the barrel for two outside ones
now life is easy fit the barrel onto the two inner pistons
move barrels down so you can get the two outer piston little ends in
fit the two circlips making sure rags in place round barrels then you dont drop these in the engine
shove barrels down

WHEN FITTING THE HEAD
Make sure you have no 2 on exhaust pointing at 90 deg to the head and make bloody sure you r pulling to take slack out of that chain at this end next fit the inlet at no 3 position this on mine is not quite square up (think its 20 pins )
oh and chain messurement for this is 5.630 long if u want to check if its streatched
KEEP tension on cam chain when tightening up the cam holders all the time or chain may slip
fit cam chain tensioner
check your timing not once but 3 Times to make sure its in same posion (OR END UP WITH BENT VALVES)
and finaly oil the lot when you have done the shim buckets before replacing cover.

Thanks John, I'll definitely try and follow that when I'm putting it back together.

I haven't bought the rings yet, I had been offered a complete 442cc kit at a potentially cheaper rate but I haven't heard back from the seller on a price despite them being so helpful at the start, not sure what's happened there. My alternative is to buy genuine Suzuki parts from Japan, which I hope will solve my problems:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190798782733? ... EBIDX%3AIT

My only other concern is that I need to hone the barrels and I was told that standard rings will still be fine, any thoughts to the contrary?
