Nc30 quietening gears removal
Anyone know is it a big job to remove the nc30 quietening gears? My engine is 72bhp, want to get as much as I can from it. Does the sprocket need to be welded onto the cam shaft or how is it done? Any info greatly appreciated. The engine work is as follows
Inlet ports gas flowed
Skimmed heads
New valve seats
Full engine rebuild
Nc35 carbs
Rlr ram air box
Facet fuel pump
Twin stack exhaust system
No air filter
Hrc jet kit
Short velocity stacks
Cbr 400 Carb slides

Re: Nc30 quietening gears removal
If your engine is making that sort of power and has that sort of work done I would be surprised if this mod hadn't been done already.
If you do need to do it you just put the cylinders to the correct position via engine timing cover (same as doing shims) and remove cam holders take cams out and use big circlip Pliers to remove the clip holding the second cog in place there are little steel dowel pegs to remove too. Very simple job really. Then replace cams ensuring they are placed correctly and job jobbed!!

Re: Nc30 quietening gears removal
For the uneducated (me!), what are the benefits of removing the quietening gears?
Are there any disadvantages to be weighed up?
My valve covers are off after checking clearances, so this would be the best time to carry out such a job.
Cheers

Re: Nc30 quietening gears removal
My old SP1 had the silencing gears removed and it sounded a bit louder than my friends' stock SP1/SP2s. I always wondered what an NC30/35 sounds like with them off. The only YouTube vid I could find was very low quality, so couldn't really hear it that well.

Most of the nc30's at bemsee have removed theirs and I think they sound rough and lose that silky smooth hum that a stock nc30 has, other than that there isn't really any major draw backs

Unless im mistaken you can put a lot of extra wear on a motor if you remove them and the backlash isn't right, Mike Norman's blog explains it a little better in his blog but even they didn't like removing them. Supposed to gain you a horse or two with a nice weight saving but I don't think id like to run the risk unless I could measure it accurately and knew it was safe to do so.

Re: Nc30 quietening gears removal
You may very well be right about the extra wear (not read Mike's blog), but for racing the i think the risk of damaging your engine through extra wear due to no quitening gears is miniscule in comparison the the likelyhood of throwing the bike at a barrier or a highside (and damaging the engine casings etc), or many many redline gear changesand & possible bent valves.VFRkieran wrote:Unless im mistaken you can put a lot of extra wear on a motor if you remove them and the backlash isn't right, Mike Norman's blog explains it a little better in his blog but even they didn't like removing them. For me - if i was heading for the finish line in a race neck and neck with another NC, and my bike lost out by a nose becasue i had 1 less BHP, i would be taking the quitning gears out before the start of the next race

Re: Nc30 quietening gears removal
total loss or a nwere gsxr genny / lithium battery if you dont have it will be a better mod.
it was common in the 250s as they had less power anyway but i dont think it will give you much gain

Re: Nc30 quietening gears removal
If this is a race bike i would be supprised if they haven't been removed,
And if they haven't been removed then remove them,Because any gain is a gain.
And as the guy's have said the genny conversion is a bigger gain.
