nc 30 getting warmer than expected

Post by yamahaha »

hi just bought my girlfreind an nc 30 after buying it we noticed the lower rad was knackered so i replaced it new coolant plugs oil air filter etc and it seems to get hot within a few miles it is showing 70 degrees if you stop at lights for more than a few secs the temp is straight up to 80 degrees and if stopped for more than a couple of minutes it is up to 90+ and the fan is kicking in this is when the ambient temp is about five degrees is this normal?
also the bike seems to have a distinct whine mid way up the revs is this normal for these gear driven cam engines to sound like this ?
one more thing it is almost impossible to select neutral with the engine running and the gear selection is very tight does this sound all typical nc 30
i,m going to mod the radiator pipes as ive heard this helps coolant flow
thinking of selling my 600 and buying a nc 35 as this has to be the best handling bike i have ridden in a long time any help would b much appreciated .......ian

the thermostat may be gubbed....if it is not opening up and letting the water flow through the radiators then the temp will rise much higher quicker.
it is quite normal for the temp to be quite high on the nc30,especially whilst sitting at lights etc.but when it is as cool as it is the now then it should not rise so quickly.
there is a distinct whine from the nc30 because of the gear driven cams.

the whine, completely normal, just go on youtube and have a listen to some of them on there

the temp, completely normal. the lower rad does get full of crud from the road so worth soaking overnight and cleaning

the neutral, completely normal. helps if you gently blip the throttle to raise the revs a tad, then it selects neutral easier

they are real common questions, just one of those idiosyncrasies about the mighty V4.
we can all dream of 45's and RC30's

It doesn't. The best thing to do is make sure the cooling system is in good order.

Flush the system, soak the radiators and flush them out.

As said, the little V4's run pretty hot, when you get moving the temp should come back down. When they get hot you'll also hear the tappets more than usual, this is normal also.

Hi

There are two small punchmarks on the gearchange shaft and the clamp, its well worth checking the marks are perfectly aligned. If they are even one spline out, it makes finding neutral very difficult, and changes are not as solid as they might be, resulting in false neutrals and so forth.

Thanks.

For finding nuetral, blip the throttle to 3k or above while clicking up and it will slip in nicely. I had the same query when i bought my nc. Everything else you mension sounds normal aswel, like someone said earlier every once in a while you want to clean the rad and mesh on the belly pan they get clogged full of crap.

I had the neutral problem on my bike, I took the clutch apart, replaced the friction plates and filed down the clutch basket as it had some nasty grooves in it. Fixed the problem, but I was more interested in the taking apart and learning rather than the fix itself, wouldn't have minded just bringing the revs up to get into neutral.
