Sure that this has been asked before, apologies if it has but my FZR 1WG genesis has been standing for 10 years. Have fitted new battery and treated it to fresh fuel but it will not fire. Fuel is dripping out of the belly pan. Have taken the air box off and the carb slides were tight. I have heard that after all this time that I will need to strip the carbs and clean them. If this is the case, what kind of job is it. How easy is it to remove the carbs? Is there any literature that will assist me in doing this and will I need to replace any perishable parts? Is it possible to remove the carbs with the engine in place?

If it's been standing for 10 years with fuel in it then unfortunately that's not good news. It turns to a thick jelly and crystalises inside the carbs and normally sits in all the nooks and crannies and blocks up ports and stuff.

You do not need to take the engine out to whip the carbs off but the fuel tank and airbox need to be removed.

I have just rebuilt a set of FZR250 carbs, which are *very* similar and it wasn't too hard. Just get four boxes, label them 1,2,3 & 4 and be methodical and carefull. Take mobile phone pics as you go.

All I gave to my local garage was the main carb bodies, emulsion tube and the part which holds the main/pilot jets (with them still in it!).

There is a chap on here who sells carb rebuild kits and no doubt he will chime in like clockwork but his kits are good and way cheaper than the OEM parts. I would happily use him again. Litekblair is/was his username.

Have managed to get the carbs off, and will get new seals etc from NPR manchester,but the inlet rubbers and air box rubbers are as hard as hell. Any tips for refurb or is it a straight case of replacement if still available?

There are many posts on here regarding the softening of both airbox boots and intake rubbers ranging from steeping in near boiling water to treatment with wintergreen oil/acetone or xylene thinners.
Both items are still available new and in view of the very low price of the airbox boots it is recommended to replace them;

Any Yamaha dealer can order from the part numbers.
