Electric Fuel Pumps
Hey All,
Returning to an FZR400 after a few years absence, I've bought an old dog for £185 which I'm going to rebuild and use for a track bike.
It's was a non-runner, having not run for 5 years and I've managed to get it running today. The fuel pump is shagged and I see from ebay that they are a) very expensive second hand and b) rarer than the preverbal rocking horse Sh*t.
Has anyone used a universal pump like this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ELECTRIC-FUEL ... 25856b33e4
I only ask as I'm not keen as the original pumps use points and I don't want to spend £50 on a second hand one to find it fails in 2 months time!
Any comments would be welcomed.
BTW I ran it using it gravity straight into the carbs in case you were wondering. I have 12V at the pump when the run switch is put on and a feed when cranking / running, so it's defo the pump.

Re: Electric Fuel Pumps
Pumps often come up a lot cheaper that what is currently available.
Search for a fuel tank also; often the pump/filter and pipework is included at about the same price as a tank or
pump is worth sold separately. ( non at present unfortunately)
A points repair kit is available. ( pattern).
The 600 3HE pump is only slightly larger than the 400 unit and usually cheaper.
The pump you linked is not expensive so not a worry if it is unsuitable.
I would go for one of these units if I required a pump in a hurry.

Have you cleaned the points inside the old pump ?

Hey,
Thanks for the link, that looks like a good alternative. Yeah I've cleaned the points (look like they were burnt / welded) so I'm going to take it to work tomorrow and see if I can get it working on a power supply. Thanks for the info.

Keep updating with progress; a build thread is even better.
We always like pics of a new members acquisition.

Sheds are good, sheds just need a lot more to get them right.

Re: Electric Fuel Pumps
It's a 1988 FZR400 Exup 3en.
I used to have an 87 1wg a few years ago that I used as a track bike, and again whilst a bit of a shed very happily embarrassed lot more expensive and powerful bikes. I stopped riding when my son was younger but I've been really missing it.
Now I've that I know this one runs I've got the following work to do:
New Oil & Filter
Set up & balance carbs
Overhaul front forks, new seals and oil (legs a bit pitted, may need a re-chrome)
Overhaul / repair replace front & rear brakes
Sort out Exup cables (snapped) or just lock open
Overhaul rear shock linkage, check / clean rear shock
Fit end can, missing clamps and brackets
Rear tyre not sealing on rim, front tyre valve split - also tyre the wrong way round!!
Needs top fairing bracket, fit bodywork, and spray.
So as you can see it's not going to be ready for this summer, but hoping to get it out next year. Wish me luck!!
I'll take some pics soon and post them up.

Re: Electric Fuel Pumps
Check the valve clearances before you do the carbs.
Fzr600 3he forks are the same - if you look for later ones they'll use 298mm discs (yours are 285mm)
Yam blue spot calipers bolt on to either forks.
