NC30 - 300km/h speedo query
Hi all.
I've recently done a deal on a tidy NC30 which I'm picking up next week. Although I haven't seen the bike yet (it's way down south) I have spoken to the guy on the phone and he seems like a genuine nice chap. He has advised me that he brother was the first owner in NZ and it has been in his shed barely used for over a decade. He sent me some nice photos of the bike and all in all it seems very tidy and has obviously done low k's, as evident from the low wear and tear.
One thing I'm a bit confused with is the speedo. I've owned a jap-import NC30 before and it came with the usual 180km'h speedo. The one I'm picking up next week has a speedo that goes up to 300km/h. My first thoughts are is that it is a RC30 speedo that has been installed. Am I correct in assuming this?
I would be pleasantly surprised if it is the original speedo, because then the odometer reading would be more likely genuine at 8000km. I'm not particularly bothered though because it is evident from the pictures the bike is in good order anyway.
Any input would be much appreciated. Am I on the ride track thinking it's a RC30 speedo?
Cheers all

Hi mate, where abouts in nz are you? From my understanding it's just not a jdm bike - the German and French had that speedo, maybe Australia too? I don't think they were sold here new?

Re: NC30 - 300km/h speedo query
I am in Wellington, but the bike is in the South Island. I don't think they were ever sold NZ new. Australia I am unsure. The seller has told me the bike was brought into the country by the Japanese owner who moved here, this is why I'm assuming it is a Japanese import. Once I see all the documents I may know more. So you think it is possible it's the original speedo? It would be a nice surprise!

Ahh...not sure how you would check if it wasn't the originally speedo, however I'm fairly sure it would be an nc30 one as I believe there are difficulties with using ones from other bikes due to the cdi. What does carjam say about km's when it was imported, and the country it was imported from?

Re: NC30 - 300km/h speedo query
Yeah I asked on Kiwibiker for it. A guy just gave me a ring and said he had it and we did a deal. I'm really surprised I got a reply so quickly from someone with such a nice bike. I'm really only interested in a really nice example, I wasn't looking for some rat bike.
It seems reasonably original, excluding the exhaust.
I read on another forum that the RC30 speedo fits a NC30, but this may be rubbish. The reason I'm suspicious is that when I search google for a 300km/h nc30 speedo nothing comes up. Also from personal experience a NC30 cant do much more than 200k..
Unfortunately I cant check Carjam, the plates dont come up which are on it. The Japanese guy who brought it to NZ is actually still the 'registered owner' but the guy I'm buying it off has papers from JP to say he is the owner. The guy it getting new plates for it. When he gets rego and warrent next week before i pick it up then it will go over to his name.. it's a bit of a long story but it seems to prove to me that it has infact been sitting in a shed since it basically came to NZ. Nice fella though and he sent me a dozen or so close up photos, from them I have no reason to believe its done much more than 8000k.

Re: NC30 - 300km/h speedo query
I have sat on a Swiss spec RC30 which had a speedo exactly the same as that in Km/h, so my guess is it's an RC30 speedo, I'm pretty sure they fit ok and over the last year or so I have actually seen one or two RC30 speedo's come up on eBay in the UK listed as NC30 ones, quite an easy mistake to make to be honest.

That is an RC30 speedo. The NC30 JDM speedo only reads upto 180km/h. You can fit them no problem.Icemaestro wrote:Ahh...not sure how you would check if it wasn't the originally speedo, however I'm fairly sure it would be an nc30 one as I believe there are difficulties with using ones from other bikes due to the cdi. The European speedos read upto 240km/h.
Speedo's are cable driven and have nothing to do with the ignition unit, as long as the cable fits and it is calibrated to the same turning speeds then you can use virtually any speedo that will fit.

Right. Thanks for that. I guess it was swapped over in Japan as finding a nc30 speedo in NZ would be a lot easier...
