new vfr project
Hi im new to the forum and have recently bought an 1994 vfr400 as a project bike. Ive already decided on wilbers suspension, tyga exhaust system, aluminun rads and samco hoses and a fairings kit to use. As for engine modifications im open to anything that will bring the bhp up. Looking for peoples opnions and experience of highly tunning these bikes and the 444cc big bore conversion in particular.
Look forward to hearing your ideas

You'll tend to find peoples opinions here are the 'collectors opinion' - myself included. These bikes are a dying breed, it's a shame to mess around with the engine by boring it up unless you're racing. IMO the best thing to do is give it a proper service and rebuild, put a good flowing exhaust on it and uprate the carb internals - you'll have a great bike that handles sweet (if you sort the suspension too!)
If you're after big BHP, a 400 isn't the bike for you!

Re: new vfr project
welcome to the forum, in my opinion your heading the right direction, get yourself some good suspension and tyres, free up some horses with a good system and unleash the sounds of a V4,keep the temps down with the new rads and get it looking smart with a new kit, be it a Tyga kit or a chinese kit who cares, its your bike mate you want it to look good , enjoy it.
as for BIG horse power the only way to go about it is with a bigbore kit,ive never used one but i know some who have and they love it, if want a VFR400R with more power and more importantly more torgue then thats the only way to go,but i have to agree with iDemonix, if POWER is what your longing for 70BHP from a big bore kit isn't going to do much for you. what you'll spend on getting the bits above plus the money for the big bore kit you may as well bought a 600. but thats not the spirit of the thing is it ?
speak to Rick Oliver as i know he's had some 400+ bikes

It's not having what you want but wanting what you've got....Loud ,Proud and Modified ....

I wouldn't go with samco hoses, got a set of GPI red silicone hoses £30 delivered to my house, just look on ebay Australia then switch the link to UK and it's cheaper than the same thing from ebay UK itself

Re: new vfr project
I'm not a fan of the JE pistons. They tend to be on the heavy side which can cause reliability issues. Maybe they improved them but I would be weary.
I am having my engine rebuilt soon with bigger pistons and carrillo rods but it isn't cheap and good pistons are hard to come by. These bikes just handle so well and having 80+hp at the rear wheel will completely transform the bike.
I already have a really nice 2009 CBR600RR but it's no V4 with gear driven cams and a beautiful twin spar aluminum frame.

Ahhh you're state side, we have gumtree over here which is similar. But what I was actually implying was how did you find it to ride?

It's very easy to go fast on it!! It's also very comfy. I did a 500mile ride up to Laguna Seca in one day last year with no issues. No soreness the next day at all.iDemonix wrote:Ahhh you're state side, we have gumtree over here which is similar. But what I was actually implying was how did you find it to ride?
I bought it second hand with Ohlins fork internals and a rear shock which feel great. The engine is also fantastic for street riding. It pulls strong from low rpm up to red line with lots of mid range power.
I haven't ridden it in a few months because I low sided it out at the track (cold tire:oops:) ,, but everything is fixed and replaced. All I gotta do is pick up an oil filter and change the oil when I get home Friday.
It's doesn't get the attention that the NC's get though. CBR's are a dime a dozen but NC30s and 35s are rare birds here in the US.

My old man had a 2008 600RR. Made the NC30 feel like an old tank. Taller seat but much lighter and tighter all round. (20 years newer so what do you expect).iDemonix wrote:Ahhh you're state side, we have gumtree over here which is similar. But what I was actually implying was how did you find it to ride?
Really enjoyed riding it, even the note from the I4, mind you it did have an Acropovic system on it so that probably had something to do with it.
Hard to get a feeling of satisfaction riding it though becuase as soon as you even start to unleash the power your way over any speedlimits.
Much more low down feel than the earlier models. Would definalty recommend trying one, see what floats your boat.
