Problems with bandit 400

Post by simenon »

Hello
I came here to ask if anyone could help me figure out whats the matter with my bandit..

So, problem is that under braking, i get both oil and temp warning lights?
I have changed engine oil and oilfilter many times while this has been going on to try if any difference, but no..
the lights go away if i slightly rev the engine as i come to stop.
it is really strange, since first i thought, perhaps it's my oil pump and i lose my oil pressure, but then why does my temp light also come on? are they meant to go on simultaneously? and they don't go on if i come to stop really slow(like engine brake) and no problem when bike is idling, only come on while actually braking.

I'm still going to try to set my idle up to 3-4k, to see if it actually could be oil pump or is it something else.. really running out of ideas.

2nd thing, do you actually have to remove front wheel to get a new speedometer cable in??? if so, what kind of techniques do you use for front wheel lifting?

could someone also either give me a link of perhaps find out what specific model my bike is?
GK75A-116732, i have no clue even from which country its imported from.

Thanks!

Is it an oil pressure or level light on the bandit? If it's in the bottom of the sump it's probably a level sensor higher up near the crank and it might be pressure.
I know my Yamaha engine's have a level sensor and they can play up. Have you tried facing the bike downhill to see if the light comes on?
It could be an earthing fault or short on the clocks or loom as well, check all the plugs and earth points.
I bet if you can find a wiring diagram those dash lights have a common earth or live supply.

i believe its an oil pressure switch, its on the front of the engine, quite down, on the oil filter cover.
i will try facing down and uphill tomorrow to see if it has any effect.
i have tried to follow where the wire goes, goes from front of the engine - by the shifter - up under gas tank/seat - and ends up in bundle of wires where i think i goes to the dash.
ill have a look on the wiring and earthing also since i doubt it being pressure issue because its only under braking and doesnt effect idle speed or anything for that matter.

thanks for your answer, hope to get this fixed soon.

Edit: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C11s ... Wiring.png same picture is in my service manual. doesnt really tell much.

Theres a diode between the oil and water lights, (triangle with line on it) power should only flow one way through it, if it's faulty that may be why both lights come on together.
See if you can test it.

i havent yet checked the diode since i havent found it.
i did however try facing a quite big down hill, standstill engine running nothing..
braking lightly and nothing, forgot however do braking uphill.
if i brake balanced with both brakes and come to a decent stop, lights wont come up.
and even if i come in hard, keeping revs up nothing..

rather odd to say the least..

so, i checked the wiring, 1st, wire leaves oil pressure switch from the front of the engine, goes near to the battery, from where it goes to water temp switch which is located right above the engine, (on the coolant pump?) from where it goes to the dash.

so both of them if im correct are connected to eachother, both are on the front end of the bike, and both light up when braking hard, which is strange since the fluids flow towards them while braking..?
