Ignition coil mounting

Had the NC30 apart for a paint and noticed that the rear ignition coil for the two rear cylinders is not mounted to anything, but just floating around in the area around the battery box. The front coil is mounted properly according to the repair manual. The bike has non-stock fairings and after a look I cannot find a suitable place to mount the coil to the frame. The bike seems to run fine.
So the question is, do the ignition coils need to be mounted and grounded to function properly? Can I leave it where it is, or should I really put forth the effort to mount it? Or can I leave it free but connect a ground wire to the two bolt holes and secure that to the main ground bolt on the frame for the battery.
A related question, after disconnecting the 2 small wire leads that run to the wiring loom, not the spark plugs, I can't for the life of me remember which wire goes to which lead. Does it matter? Will it reverse polarity and affect spark? Again, she seems to be running fine un-grounded and with the 2 wires as I reconnected them, but I would like to be sure.
Thanks all!
