I havnt fitted L.E.D's the standard indicators/bulbs are fitted


I was checking my bike over for an MOT last week and noticed the indicators not working (if im honest i cant remember when they stopped working). Anyway, i found the relay was full of water and corroded up.
So bought one off ebay and when it came it had cb400 aero written on the relay (bought it from a breakers). Plugged it in and now the indicators flash really fast!?
The relays look excatly the same from the outside. Front bulbs are 18W and rears are 15W. I know honda say they require 21W but these bulbs were in when i bought the bike and they flashed normally.


So now im really stuck. Is the relay wrong? should i put 21W bulbs in? or is there another fault.....

Dry out the old relay & clean up the pins & plug. Check each bulb & clean each bulb seat/wiring. You might have a corroded connection.
Personally if the eBay item does not match the description, I send it back.
I only buy parts for my make & model of bike as on occasions they might be different.
I wouldn't have thought a indicator relay is different.
Hyper flashing is a mot fail & is a symptom of a blown bulb/unconnected bulb or if you had LEDs on a non led relay which isn't the case.

Put 21w bulbs in.
There are two types of flasher unt; electro/mechanical and solid state.
Solid state units (aftermarket) are for L.E.D. bulbs or non standard combinations of wattage ; they flash at the same rate regardless of load. (wattage)

Electro mechanical units (O.E.M) are designed to operate on a specific wattage.( usually 21w+21w+1.5/3w)
The load is passed through a bi-metal strip which distorts through heat and breaks the contact switching off the current.
With no current, it cools down and closes the circuit.

If the wattage is correct it flashers at the correct rate; lower wattage means it gets less hot and returns to the closed position quicker= rapid flashing.

Often an older unit will have operated so many times that the bi-metal strip becomes weaker and will flash at an acceptable rate with incorrect bulbs fitted. When it fails and is replaced with a new unit the wattage of the bulbs is not sufficient to operate correctly.
