Hi folks, i'm sure you've all seen posts about shims before. I measured all mine up and the gaps etc. Ordered my new shims and well... the two of the inlet valve shims, where i should have a .13mm clearance after having calculated it (or so i thought!), i can't get the .13 gauge in. i can however get the .10mm gauge in and it feels quite loose.

Not tried to start the bike yet as i've got other work to do to it first, but just thought i'd ask..should i get slightly smaller shims so that i can get to about .13 or .15? Or will i be ok?

All the other shims are within the tolerance set out in the haynes manual.

Cheers.

I often fine lap valve shims on a surface plate (thick piece of glass will also work), some wet/dry paper and some solvent. Just make sure you move the shim in figures of 8 and also rotate the shim at regular intervals.

I would only take off what I couldn't get from moving to a thinner shim - Usually 0.03-0.04 max
