3tj fork setup

Looks like I'll have to do some fork seals soon, the standard setup is a bit soft.
Which grade oil, spacer and airgap should I use ???

hi boris
done mine a couple of times and ended up with weight related maxton springs and spacers (not progressive)
standard weight oil (10w) at 509ml per leg, (which is a bitch as the cans are 1ltr but they tend to have just about enough in em to cover the 18ml)
air gap is 80mm no springs and forks depressed
if you don't wanna chuck another £120 at it (for maxton or whatever) you could use the original springs as long as there in tolerance (max spring length 341mm) with a heavier oil 15w might do the trick

after talking to maxton, they sent the spacers longer than recommended so i could cut em down, as it happened they ended up only a little longer than their recommendation but i ride 2 up alot so needed em a bit stiffer
as for the seals the sp is a slightly different depth, so don't take mister wemoto's word for it ;) and check first, can't remember off the top of my head but i think there's about 1/2 a mm in it, so if you get the thicker ones and you need the thinner you wont get the cir-clip on

not tried the 15w myself,
but it has been recomended on several threads.
best bet suck it and see, then let us know if it worked,
£12.50 for the oil is cheeper than new fork internals and could be the way forward for anyone not wanting to spend loads on upgrades, but have a reasonable handeling bike to sell on

Not sure if this helps but, I just gave mine a re-build, after fitting the r6 shock it seemed to push too much weight forwards so I wanted to stiffen them up a bit and balance things out.

In the end we went for 15wt oil with the air gap at 3mm below standard so so 3mm of extra oil. works a treat for me at 11 (and a lil) stone. And also, it seems to handle a lot better on the turn in than previously - before after the shock conversion ti leant in like it was falling over half the time - now it's smooth as anything.

However I tend to fare towards a stiffer handling setup than most so maybe 15wt at that standard setup would be best?

@ pearson, have you got the standard red R6 shock spring on it as these can be a bit harsh,
mine came with both the standard red and lighter weight black springs, never tried the red as the black is plenty stiff enough, even 2 up
can't remember the exact weights, but the black spring is rouley in the middle between the standart tj shock and the standard R6 shock

Mines the red spring, plus, its 3 clicks I think on the adjustment (for the spring) which probably doesn't help.

At the same time though, I kinda like it. Even if it is a bit skittish in the wet - barely sees the rain though so it's not too much a problem.
