Before i go and blindly drop the engine out whats the correct procedure for doing so? Can it be done single handed? does the front wheel need removing?

It's easier to strip the bike down to the frame if you want to do it single handed without hurting yourself or the bike. When I do it, I put something under the sump to rest the engine on and lift the chassis off the engine. You can drop the engine without stripping the bike by lifting the chassis if you have another person to help lift it.

Bike is pretty much stripped, its a trackbike so there wasnt much to remove anyway. Ive got a 2nd pair of hands on the way round so will try the lift over the top idea.

You can do it single handed and the front wheel can stay in but take the mudgaurd off early on - it will be scratched if you don't. You'll need the carbs, exhaust, radiator and chain etc off. I've got a platform trolley and it's great for dropping and engine onto although it could do with jacking up a bit

Take the exup pulley off at the exhaust end then take the cables off the pulley mark the top one or take a picture. Really though it's quite straight forward even the electrics have coloured block connectors.
