Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!

I bought a Genesis CDI to try on my 3EN2 in an effort to remove the speedo restriction (it's a track bike and I don't want a speedo on it).

The Genesis CDI plugs into the 3EN2 loom and everything does what it should up until we try to start it. The engine turns over but there's no spark. I think the 3EN2 loom might route some gubbins through the EXUP servo because there's a red wire with a blue trace and a solid green wire, both with male bullet connectors (standard) plus the round plug that goes to the EXUP servo. The Genesis CDI doesn't like trying to start the bike with the EXUP servo connected so there is something that goes in and comes out of the EXUP doings to get the bike to run.

I can't find a 3EN2 wiring diagram anywhere on t'interweb and the USA bikes' wiring isn't the same as the Japanese bikes according to the ones I could find.

There is no manual for the 3EN2 in English, only in total Japanese.
I have the Genuine Yamaha 3EN service manual with probably the worst wiring diagram of any Yam manual ever printed.
It is in black/white and all colurs are shown by a single Japanese character.
It would be totally pointless to post a pic of it even.
I have also a 2TK supplementary manual that has a much better (full colour and large) wiring diagram but it is different to the 3EN one . The colours have only a single Jap character.
Perhaps if I brought both manuals down on Saturday,Chris could decipher the 3EN wiring manual using the 2TK as a reference for the characters.I would bring down the M-max box also, so as you could run without speedo sending the limit signal as a test.
I am pretty sure the solid dark green wire goes to the speedo and is part of the restriction.

The two wires you are on about;


See if the green wire is this one at the rear of the speedo;


If so this wire is plugged into the M-Max.
The TCI will need a signal from the servo, which is probably the red/blue .

If you plug the clocks ,servo and original TCI back in,start it and then disconnect each of the two wires in turn,you may get somewhere in the meantime.
I do not think the Genesis TCI will run a 3EN unrestricted and with no speedo.
Let me know if I need to bring a known Genesis TCI down also (off your old bike),the one you bought may be goosed.
Do you think the SUC/SAC (essentially a Genesis with exup valve) wiring is different to 3EN2 ?
I presume you downloaded the manual from FZR Archives,the wiring diagram is in the last chapter.

The 3EN2 wiring is different to the SUC/SAC wiring, the connectors to the EXUP servo are different as are the colours (as far as I can tell, anyway.

If the Genesis and 3EN stators and flywheels are the same and in the same positions, the engine should run using a Genesis TCI as long as the wiring is there to support it. It may be we have to re-do the loom to get around the bloody restriction but I've also emailed Ignitech to see if they make or can make an ignition that'll work on the early 400s.

If you don't mind popping down on Saturday with the diagrams that'd be brill and I can photograph the wiring diagrams to peruse at our leisure*.

* that's a really bad choice of words right there...

What you really need is a 2TK CDI

The TCI on a 3EN has to figure the exup servo into the equasion whereas the Genesis does not.
A FZR 1000 Genesis TCI will not run a FZR 1000r (EXUP), just saying .
Try putting the original parts back on and disconnecting the wires in the meantime,the results will save a lot of diagnostic time.

I agree with this; and it has been suggested in a post by Boris from a few years back and also recently in the last few months the same scenerio was discussed and the author bought a 2TK TCI but unfortunately ,even after prompting ,no update was received to verify the outcome,which is disappointing and defeats the object of the forum.!

My thinking was that, ostensibly, the 1WG (not including the 2TK!) engines are 'the same' and as such interchangeable, ie a Genesis engine can be used in a 3EN2 using all of the 3EN2 electrics, likewise a 3EN2 engine can be used in a Genesis using all the Genesis electrics. If we follow this to its conclusion, a Genesis TCI should work in a 3EN2 using the Genesis TCI and a suitably butchered 3EN2 wiring loom (essentially turning a 3EN2 loom into a Genesis loom).

me 3en1 has a 2tk tci (thought they was all like that in a parts bin stylee), i didnt think the genisis had a exup!!!!! lol. Everyday is a school day eh........
Anyway, not really related but i just grafted a c90 cdi on me klr600, i had one and the klr unit was 80quid. So putting another ignition unit on something else is deffo doable, just watch out for diferant polarity on the pick up coil otherwise the advance maybe backwards or atleast out!!!!! Tho it shouldnt be a problem with a proper tci unit.
Could you use a 3tj unit?
