3TJ Caliper Re-Build

Post by pearson* »

So, i've recently been undertaking a load of work on the bike, carbs re-built and re-tuned, valves done, new rear shock, full front fork rebuild, head bearings, new swingarm bearings, a good clean, blah blah... however, all of this work i've pretty much taught myself how to do over the last few weeks and i'm still learning.

Its now time to do the brakes but the pistons seem a little, erm, awkward to get out. Which is problematic seeing as i've just brought new seals etc. for the lot.

Any advice on persuading these pistons out of the calipers?

Compressed air.
You get an airline put the nozzel in the banjo bolt hole and squirt it. If you don't have an air line take them to a garatoge and get them to do it ... Might cost you some doughnuts or a small amount of cash

DO NOT do that with your fingers anywhere near the pistons!!!
They come out bloody fast and will break/cut off your finger tips.
Put a piece of wood between to pistons then cover with a towel go very gently on the compressed air and ease them out slowly. If you go mad you will vaporize the old fluid breath it in and that makes you cough....
If one comes all the way out before the others you then can't get the rest out this way.
You can also buy a tool from Draper that pulls them out.

I had the pistons in one side of a caliper totally stuck so had to slide a piece of wood through and clamp it to the bench holding the free pistons in place then get the airline on it to pop the other side out and boy do they pop nearly shit me pants doing the first one :o
Good luck with yours I'm sure you won't have to much trouble if you've managed all the rest of the work and the next time you need to do it you'll piss it.

One of the rear pistons was fully seized so i've just taken the rear to a friendly engineering company i know for them to sort out... I just can't be bothered haa.

Got the front ones done though, TI spanner in the middle, halved an old inner tube (to stop it hitting metal to metal) and wrapped it round, out in a jiffy.

Used to be scared of all the work past basic chassis work and servicing, but the more I do, the easier it gets.

Plussss, after having the restrictors out it got set up and dyno'd (full carb clean, rebuild, new jets, the lot) its putting 72 out so with the larger jets that were in there im fairly confident it has some sprucing up in the engine bay although im not confident enough to start ripping that open yet.

Cheers guys.
