Hi guys bought a standard set of chain and sprockets. And when i sit the chain up tight around both sprockets. There seems to be an extra link. Is it usual to have to split a link in the chain? And if so what is the best way. i have the chain breaker and riveting tool.

There's normally extra links turn the hub to slacket posistion fully clockwise. And cut/ fit from there

Unless the supplier is a muppet, or you have ordered a chain for the wrong bike, or you aren't running non-standard gearing, then you should have the right number of links to start with. You don't specify which bike you have, however, and the various NCs do vary. It's not unknown for companies to have the wrong data on imports. It is quite common to see people offering 108 links for NC35s, for example. Too long....

NC35 15/38 102 links
NC30 15/40 104 links
NC24 15/45 106 links
NC21 15/45 106 links

Note that for the 21 and 24, I don't hae the fiches and have used diagrams on CMSNL and eBay to gather the data. Check your model before butchering the chain, just in case the 'extra' link or links are because the hub isn't adjusted!

Ok just went and had a look have a 15/40 ratio. And chain has 108 links if i count the joining links. Does this mean i have to take of 4 links?

Code says it all. 108 links. Yes, you will need to 'adjust' the chain. You can tell these people until you are blue in the face that your bike needs a shorter chain, but they never listen to anyone because their catalogue has to be right.. lol

Tell them its the wrong size chain and ask for an appropriate sized one, saves pissing around cutting it down and hopefully they will update their listing, not everybody has the tools to cut chains.

Direct them to the Honda Service manual if they are still stupid (in the docuemnt library)
