Failed rec/reg

Hi there,

I think my rec/reg failed as yesterday the seat was getting very hot (coocked battery!?) and battery was flat.

As recommended I am thinking of fitting one of a R6 but I am not shure which one is the right. These are my findings in different forums about which one may fit:

VFR400 (original?): SH633A
Fireblade SC28/29/33: SH633A
Yamaha R6 (RJ05): SH713AA
Yamaha R6 (RJ03): SH650A

They all come in different housings and sizes, some with cooling ribs even on the back (not quite sure, because photos in ebay dont show whole backs). I think one with a flat back would be best so i could use a cooling pad or paste (the ones used on CPU-coolers) to get better heat transmission to the frame. Also reusing the mounting holes would be great.

Any recommendations which one to use are greatly appreciated.

cheers,
Matthias

Before outlaying money on a replacement rect/reg are you intending to do charging system checks to ensure that the rect/reg is the cause of your problem?

I use reg/recs off R6's, the 5-pin model from approximately 2002-05 (5SL?) models. Any model can be used, far easier if it has only 5 pins.

I hold it to the subframe using one of the original mount holes, and then put a nyloc nut on the back of the bolt (rock solid). If you mount it like this you'll need to file down some of the cooling fins (top left of reg in pic below) so the the reg clears the metal ribs of the nc30 subframe (it's an easy 5 minute job with a hand file). You could always drill an extra hole for the other bolt if you can be bothered.

The yamaha regs have a better cooling capacity than the honda models you mention, don't be tempted to go for one without rear cooling fins - this reduced cooling capacity can put the charging system under more strain.

Better still than the shunt type regs (SH#### models) are the MOSFET units from more recent bikes (comparison below, MOSFET on right), more info here: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=38304

Make sure it is the reg/rect at fault though, otherwise you'll just keep destroying batteries and other parts. :peace:

Thanks mates,

so now I have to watch out on eba* which one I can get.

Will the charging-system-checks document from the library be enough or are there other things I should check?

Got one of a 2004 R6 on eba*.

Thursday I will do the charging-system checks and hopefully find out that no other things got fu** up.

Make sure you wire it correctly. If I remember the two wires swap over from the original reg rec but the three yellow ones can go in any order. Hope that makes sense and someone may correct me if I'm wrong.
