I'd like to try total loss but if it is a pain, put stuff back on. Actually, more exactly, I'd like to try the reported quicker spin-up that removing the flywheel and electrical generating magic gives.

just a question or two first. :-)

Background: NC30 is a race bike - no lights etc. Loom is modified and there is no ignition key - the on/off switch is the right-hand switchgear on/off switch.

Warning: I am an electrical retard ('scuse the pun).

So ....

* Do I just take it all off, including the flywheel?
* Is the required flywheel puller M20x1.25?
* Are there any issues with leaving all wiring in place, like reg/rect etc while I try it?
* Can I keep my current battery (it is an SSB YTZ5-S little-'un but is only a month old)? I understand I'll need to put it on charge between sessions.

If I decide to put it back on again ...

* Any there any timing issues or whatever (= electrickery) that I need to consider or is it just put it back on?

Just remove the flywheel, I do not know the puller size. If you decide you do not like the result, put flywheel back on. Flywheel is not part of ignition system.

You might consider staring the bike with another battery in parallel, your small battery will appreciate the assistance.

I used a small battery and a larger YT12 sized one to start it.
Flywheel off and it makes it miles faster..

flywheel off is all you really need to do.

If you like it then you can take off the genny, remove all the tape from the wiring loom and bin all the wires and shit you dont need (less weight is better!)

but just to try remove the flywheel, and yes m20 x 1.5 bolt is what you need.

there will be less inertia on the crankshaft so if your finding it starts stalling increase the rpm at tickover (not an isusure on a track bike)

Thanks all. So, flywheel it is then for a try. :-) Bike idles at 3-4000 rpm so should be right.

How much rotating mass do you lose removing the flywheel compared to flywheel + 'genny'?

Re flywheel puller: M20x1.5. Thanks. I saw it in another thread on this forum but had also seen it wlese as M20x1.25.

So next question: the manual says to discard the gasket on the alt cover and put in a new one. I'll try, but I doubt I'll get a gasket here before next weekend (race weekend), so can the gasket be reused ... or is that just plain stupid?

"genny" is not rotating mass so you wouldn't lose anything more than dead weight if you took it out too.

As for the gasket you can always use sealant with your current gasket as a temporary fix

But, git a M20x1.5 rotor puller today so I'll try for a gasket and we'll see what the fuss is about. :-)

no - there is a bit that will come out so lean it over a touch if you can. Is dribbles rather than torrents

rattle gun is a good call..but the slow and careful approach has it's merits..take pictures or film it if you are rattle gunning..
