Brake Line length and routing

My bike has non standard braded hoses but they seem long? with the front wheel off the ground they still have a lot of extra length in them. Three questions :
1) What length should they be? (Just long enough with the wheel off the ground and still allowing comfortable / full steering movement?)
2) I guess they must be exactly the same length to have exactly consistent pressure or would this difference not be worth worrying about?
3) Instead of holding them together at some point and the splitting ways again (mine has a little aluminium holder) surely it would be neater to attach them separately to each yoke / fork (or is there some reason that makes this a bad idea?)
As always thanks for the help
