Newbie
OK hey all.
2 things really. Firstly id like to say Hi, and im a new owner of a 1986 FZR 400 1WG and cannot wait to get it on the road.
Which brings me to item number 2.... Brakes.
i currently have the whole system off the bike as there seems to be an issue and i think a rebuild is in order. the issue is that no matter how hard i try i can not get the brakes to bleed or operate, as far as that i can tell the brake fluid is getting through the lines to the calipers, as if i crack off the banjo bolt i get fluid, but nothing i can do will get the fluid out through the bleeding nipple. And seeing as they are my life savers.... i was thinking of upgrading to braided lines anyway.
The bike was the previous owner's project bike and he ran out of money at the last stage and had too sell it to pay bills (or that was the story), all that it needs is the brakes bleeding and the indicators sorting (sorted with new relay).
Question: Where is the best place to go for caliper seals, is there any difference between the 1WG calipers and the 3Tj calipers as on here i have read that they use 27 and 34mm seals (please correct me if im wrong) other than new seals is there anything else i should look at replacing while the calipers are off the bike.
Thanks in advance for your help. ive heard this is a great forum glad to be amongst you guys.

Re: Newbie
Hi,
Have you tried back bleeding calipers through the bleed nipple with a syringe or something similar - I find this a good way to start (with lid off master cylinder) & then once you've pushed all the air out through the top, bleed in the normal way?
Phil.

Re: Newbie
No i did not know of that method. but have taken the system off now as decided to go with the braided lines.
And since i have the opportunity thought it would be wise to make sure the brakes are in the best possible condition for when i take them out. will have new pads, the braided lines and a general clean. despite the fact I bought it as an unridden project bike it could do with a bit of love all around in my opinion.

Re: Newbie
If as you say you've got the old / original rubber lines on the brakes then I'd say you really need to renew them, they're well past there life, I think it's 4-5 years.
Next up I'd have a look at the master cylinder, take off the lever, tease out the dust seal - if there's fluid behind then the seals have gone and that could be the reason for the non bleeding.
Lastly take the calipers off the bike, put a spanner between the pads and with the calipers above the master try to bleed them
Welcome to the site, I hope youre comfortable "amongst us"

Re: Newbie
Hi, i'd take the pistons out the calipers and look at the seals and clean the seal grooves out and grease it all with silicone or rubber grease. And deffo rebuild the master cylinder aswell like evil says.
Yams can be a pain in the arse when it comes to brakes. But keep at it they bleed up eventually!!
I dunno if wemoto sell brake seals, i got away with reusing me old ones. But some braided lines make the brakes alot firmer.
Cheers

Re: Newbie
I had the same thing happen
After many hours of swearing I found that the Bleed Nipples had rusted on the insides
Why not get yourself a pair of Blue Spots?

Re: Newbie
Not sure blue spots fit that model, if you have 83mm bolt spacing then I think the 3TJ calipers fit.

Re: Newbie
Disc offset may be different;Genesis have none.,unsure of offset on 3tj.
Genesis is 83mm spacing.
Triumph T595 83mm four pot calipers are recognised upgrade to twin piston calipers on the early 3HE 600's,may be a possible upgrade for 1Wg Genesis. This will depend on disc offset and caliper orientation with disc.

10mm disc offset on nearly all 80s and 90s Yams except the 1WG Genesis Billwillandrip wrote:Disc offset may be different;Genesis have none.,unsure of offset on 3tj.
