bike is running from battery only

Took the bike out for a ride yesterday and she broke down. Seems it was running off the battery the whole way.... then killed the battery and died.... I looked at some of the wiring an think I've found and fixed the bad connections. But is there an easy way to check for sure..(the multi meter is dead at the mo). e.g. should the bike run once started without a battery?

The engine will not run without a battery present.

You'll need to get hold of a working multi-meter and go from there
