• Clutch basket safe to use?

he guys, recently purchased this clutch basket for my RVF400, from another user on here,
upon opening the package, i realised one of the little prong things was snapped =/
is it still safe to use? considering all the others are intact, i've posted one or two pics!

I'd be very nervous about using it myself. Apart from the fact that it'll be out of balance, I'm not sure how the broken part's neighbours would fare without it being there to do it's share of the work. Clutches come up on eBay every now and them for fairly modest money, so I'd personally forget about trying to use it.

This came up before somewhere and I remeber this reply.

I have got some more info on this as I have one of the basket teeth cracked and chipped.

I took the basket into my local honda dealer hoping they could do some aluminium welding.

Their response is:
1. Cannot weld as too thin
2. Recommended removing the tooth and using as is because there is sufficient teeth to hold clutch plates in place
3. The balance aspect is not relevant as the basket is NOT free wheeling and the tooth very light in comparison to the whole clutch.
4. The basket is locked into a gear driving mode between crank and transmission.

The dealer staff have removed the cracked tooth and cleaned up the wear marks.

I have known this dealer for 30 years.

so basically even a honda dealer said you can still use it, it's only one of the teeth as you can see, so all the others should support it still, and like you said, it's very light wear on the first few plates, my brother said should be fine, only 1 tooth, got all the others etc, also it's not on the drive side, it's on engine braking, so it won't be to bad i hope?

i bought it from a guy off here, it was perfect, the couriers that delivered it broke it pretty much =/

not really mate, just bubble wrapped, but i'm unsure if the guy who sent it packaged it, or the delivery company :S

Unless it was sent insured, they'll just say sod off. Even if it was, they'll probably fob you off anyway!

unsure if it was insured, i know the guy who sent it, sent it recorded as he sent me the tracking number and stuff? also here's pics of the basket with internals, it doesn't look too bad, only 1 plate, and half of the other id say, but i'm leaning more towards 1 plate, but all the other teeth are in place supporting it all, so surely 1 can't go a miss?

I recon that would be fine, off me head it looks like the load bearing side is still there (unless i'm getting the rotation the wrong way round) so should be ok, out of interest wats up with the old one?

yeah is the decelleration side, engine braking wise, so not much stress should be going through it i hope?
old one, clutch was dragging, basket worn, so needed replacing :)
