Howzit muckers
Heres the deal, got the subframes and fairing hangers, yoke and frame all cleaned up back to bare metal. Also bits like radiator fan and housing and have various paints but not sure which combinations would be best on which parts as they are all various alloys etc.
The paints;
Hammerite - special metals primer [water based], Hammerite ordinary rust prevention primer [grey solvent based], Upol etch primer [grey in a spray can] and ive got Hammerite smooth straight to rust paints in silver and black[solvent based].
Obviously going to use etch primer to begin with on aluminium parts [[frame]] but for example the fan housing and fairing hangers and front fairing frame look like alloys?
About the pics well il get to that l8r ; ) .

I use paint stripper and a wire brush to obviously remove the paint.
Then wire brush it again and rust kill it - all over not just where there's rust
Next day clean it with petrol
Spray with Plasti Kote Plastic Primer - you can't simply spray acrylic onto metal it flows away.
Plasti Kote black or five wheels silver - if this is an engine casing you need to warm the part up before you spray it and leave it in a warm oven to cure it, same with brake disc carriers.
I use a PU laquer from Halfords to finish it, don't use laquer on brakes.
The problem with hammerite is you can't spray a second coat and you can't laquer it ... well not for however many weeks. What you want are thin quick coats because a thick one can run. I paint the top yoke, and handle bars around the clamps, subframes, mirror stay and anything else ... I wouldn't paint the main frame or swingarm though anodising is a much better finish for these. Sometimes you have to just clean a part because it looks over done if you paint it.
Liquid polish will clean up wiring shealthing and "Mr Sheene shines everything clean"

Everything was blasted clean, save the frame which was painstakingly cleaned in the shower!

. Thing is im mostly unsure of which primer to use where, especially on the subframes and hangers.
Thanks for the heads up on the hammerite not being lacquer friendly didnt know that, may have to get some spray can jobbies instead .
About the frame its the outher part of the twin beams id like to paint silver or black simply for asthetics, not wanting to powder coat or anodise as want it done properly [ ie by ME

] or if those carbon covers were still available id use them rather but .. they seem to have become extinct!

I used the plastic primer - it's a clear primer
Generally though you use an etching primer on bare metal.
When you cleaned the frame did you take the anodising off ? If you did then you may as well wet n dry and polish it, it doesn't have to be mirror and you can do it with a mop on a drill. After that buff it again with the mop once a year and you'll be fine.

no didnt take the anodising off just washed and scrubbed the frame till it was shiny and clean again, however theres tiny scratch marks on the outer side of the beams and id anyway like it to look more R7 ish hence wanting to go with black.
polished looks good especially when done proper but not my style all chromed looking and all that

Don't know, I think painted frames are bit odd on these bikes, a lot of how it looks is the frame. Think about the cross plane R1 when it first came out and the GSXR's with the bluish colour. I don't really think I'm purist or old guard but I try to accept a bike for what it is rather than try to make it something it isn't.
The R7 is a pretty bike but I wasn't a big fan of the lights, I preffer the second gen R1 style. The 3TJ's styling sits between the R7 and OW01, really it's FZR1000 RU but in the end it's kind of it's own thing.
Not an R7

You might be able to take it out with some scotchbite - keep working it in one direction and mask off the areas you don't want
