Fzr400 1wg starting problems!
I recently bought my fzr400 project and was told by the owner that it turns over but needed the carbs cleaned to fire, however after replacing the battery and trying to start it.....nothing, the amber light in the clock lights up and goes out when I press the starter? I have replaced the starter solenoid but still nothing it's just dead, does anybody have any ideas what it could be?

Should there be something plugged into this connector?
Thanks nick

Can't help with the starting issue but the connector is unused, don't know what it was intended for, but nothing goes in it.
Maybe start with checking all the fuses and that the connections are clean and good first.

If the battery is charged fully then I would check the voltage across it with a multimeter and see if the voltage drops right down when you press the start button, it could be the starter has seized up and is draining the battery..
Check it's in neutral as you should have a green neutral light on as well, I'm not sure if these FZR`s have a starter cut out on the neutral switch (Evilchicken might know) but if it has check the switch works. Does the engine turn over when you push it in gear?
As Clanky said check all the fuses and connectors for corrosion too.
Let us know how you get on.

You should get a red light - oil pressure and a green light neutral.
The engine will turn over in gear but only with the clutch in ... its better in neutral though.
Is the engine seized ? Turn it over by hand, take the Genny cover off and use the flywheel bolt head
After that check the fuses and the main fuse I think its on the solenoid.
If the bikes in neutral and the ignitions on bridge the solenoid terminals with a screwdriver (it will spark) tjd started should turn over.

With the ignition on I get the green neutral light but no red light? I then get the amber light come on when I press the starter button.
I checked the 4 fuses under the rear seat and they are all fine.
I tried bridging the solenoid and it by doing so the starter motor kicks in an turns over as though its trying to start.
I have tried disconnecting all the connectors and re-connecting them but still no luck

So the engine is OK and it sounds like the rest if it is working enough for now anyway.
You need to have a look at the big diode thing. It sits on the subframe with a lot of wires going in (and out). Unbolt it, and church the wires are OK ... look for the blue one. Sometimes they break at the crimp.
The only yellow on the dash is for the indicator ... its unlikely these wires got crossed more likely the bulbs are in the wrong holes

Looks like he has non stock instuments and home made binnacle; warning lights could be for anything !!

What did you deduce from the solenoid ?

Re: Fzr400 1wg starting problems!

I don't think the clocks are the originals?
Iv had another look this afternoon and there is nothing wrong with the starter or solenoid, there is a sort of relay block thing on the subframe next to the flasher relay with a block connector and lots of wires going in, I have checked and there is 12v going to it but, and his is purely a guess as electrics are not my strong point, should there not be another 12v source coming out of this block going to the solenoid when the switch is pressed?
