Steering bearings

Hi All
At the last MOT the tester found some roughness in the steering bearings at the extremes of lock. As there is not much chance of riding at the moment I thought I would get them changed.
My question is what is the best way of supporting the bike while doing this?
I serviced the forks earlier in the year by putting a length of threaded rod through the headstock with an eye bolt on the end, then lifting with the hoist thats built into my garage. This worked well, surprisingly stable! But will not work for removing the steering bearings.
Any ideas?
Cheers and a happy riding year.
