Yet another dead speedo thread

So this morning I was riding to work, and at some point along the way my speedo stopped working, just the speed dial, revs etc are fine. After some googling and searching of this site I discovered the most likely cause would be the speedo gear joint (the little plastic thing at the engine side of speedo cable), looks like mine has saw better days as it's not perfectly hexagonal but didn't look bad enough to be considered 'broken' I didn't think... Should I get a new one anyway?
So I pulled out the inner speedo cable and discovered my problem...
While I'm at getting a new speedo cable, anyone recommend some good cable lube? I'd use engine oil but I'm out of that too for the moment so thought I'd get some dedicated stuff.
Cheers all!

I don't think there's any need to lube speedo cables, wet lubes just attract dirt and muck which shortens the life of it.
I'm pretty sure new genuine cables are ptfe lined so there's no need for lube.

Aye, ordered one of those slinky glide cables from wemoto, I believe it is oiled and lined. I think most of my other cables are way overdue lubricating though, mainly choke & throttle.

Engine oil is fine for lubing cables. I don't really see the point in getting a dedicated lube for them. If you attend to your own engine oil, you're always going to have a bottle of oil knocking about, and even it you run out, what's stuck to the sides and collects in the bottom would be enough to give them a top-up.
Ironically I was watching a brand new Honda speedo cable on eBay and forgot to bid. They're only about about 12 quid from Honda anyway, but some lucky beggar got it for £5.99 posted!

I would check the other side of that plastic fitting too, it should just pull off.

The other side of said joint looked fine.
Aye speedy, plan on an oil/filter change after the worst of winter so wasn't planning on getting any oil in, however cables really need doing sooner rather than later. Would Wurth Dry Chain lube work? I'll see what else I can conjure up in the garage after work, can't remember whats back there.
Haha yeah, my uncle made a steal a few months back on eBay, box of NC35 parts for next to nothing, gotta bid to win!

well, as an update, sometime last week I got new speedo cable fitted and a new plastic drive joint supplied by Rick O, all is well again.
