Idles for 5-10 then dies

Hi all,
was hopping someone can offer some assistance on this one.
Working on getting my gsxr400 back on the road, when I got her she wouldnt start 9 times in 10 and when she did the engin would die on idle. I've since fitted new plugs, set the idle screw and replaced a coil pack that was arcing. She now starts just fine and idles at a steady speed for 5-10 mins with no real problems but after this the idle starts to slow down and then cut out.
I know the mix is running rich, when I rev it up a bit, get some smoke from the zausts but I dont really know how to set the carbs propper and they could probably use a good clean/setting by someone who knows what they are doing.
Besides the carbs any other possibles for my idle cut out problem.
Thanks all.
V

I'd say it's probably down to the idle mixtures. If it's running rich at tickover then the plugs will gradually foul up and it'll die. Set the idle mixture screws to around 1.5 - 2 turns out from fully in as a starting point and see if that improves things.

Will it start right back up when it dies or does it need to sit a while before restarting?
If it starts right back up again then dies soon after, I would doubt it was merely fouled plugs, maybe carb bowls emptying or even an ignition coil breaking down when it warms up. You never know it might even be the reg/rec cooking the battery and the CDI playing up at the high voltages this can cause.
If it won't start up untill it has been left for a while to cool down than maybe something with the engine itself, i.e. valve clearences?
Which GSXR is it anyway, you can get carb rebuild kits (o-rings, bowl seals and float seals) where abouts are you anyway?

Nice, that's some good info. Thank you
I think it must be a heat problem - had the bike out for a ride today - engin cut out a few times but restarted, had to keep the revs on to keep it going. After about 3 miles it just wouldnt restart, sounded like it was turning over okay and maybe 1 or 2 half splutters of life but basicaly nothing. Left it for 45 mins and started up okay, limped it back home and same thing again - wouldnt start.
its GSXR400 on a 88 so gk73a frame I think but not sure where on bike to check.
I'm in camberley, surrey, england
any idea where these kits come from?

I got mine from someone on the forum from USA, his name was "gsxr400 racer" on the old forum, still is I think? The kit was bang on and my GSXR400 (also a 1988 GK73a) has run great since. :D
Your problem doesn't sound like a carb problem to me though, sounds very similar to a mates bike which turned out to have a dodgy coil, ran fine till the coil warmed up then would not idle as half the plugs not firing, leave it for half an hour and ran fine for a bit again.
Certainly wont hurt to do the carbs anyway.

Thanks,
I had the engine open today and and check the valve clearances a few were out side of the range by a good bit so I have set all 16 of the bloody things back to spec - while putting it all back I noticed my right coil pack has a nice big split in its rubber shell, kind of anoide with myself that I didn't check it when I noticed the 1st was arcing. Also out of day light now to be putting stuff back in.
Will be ordering to new coils on monday (proper new ones this time not from breakers) fingers crossed back on the road by end of the week.

Just buy some coils from a bandit 650 2005 bike newer than a used set of gk73a coils and less rare.

Cheers for the linky Awynn :) but they look worse condition than mine lol.
M1KE - how sure are you that the coils from the 650 will fit ? are the mounting holes the same diameter apart ?
I've spotted a set if you can confirm they will defo work I'll snap em up.
Cheers mate,
Matt :D
