Curious as to whether any damage can be caused while turning over the engine without the shims in place?
Question was asked in the valve clearance thread but no answer was giiven.
Ant ideas lads?

If the cam runs on the retainer when no shim is in there is a remote chance of the cotter coming out so best to have a shim in.

Done it plenty of times, worse thats happen is the arm has got stuck in the shim hole and needed a little bit of leverage to release it.

As above, you can pop the cotter out by hand and drop the valve.. will happen certainly if you fire the engine up.

You take a chance doing it. Can be fine, can risk dropping the valve.

I always put a shim in for the fact that its a ball ache to put the valve collets back on without a spring compresor which you fit by removing the head...
