Tachometer

I'll be buying a VFR400 NC30 this sunday and, when I went to see the bike in person, the seller showed me the only problem there is - the tachometer only shows the engine's idling speed, nothing else.
Does anyone know of this problem too or know how to fix it? I've looked around for replacement tachos but if there's an easier solution, I'm all ears. or eyes, if you wanna think of it that way!

That it is a weird one.

Often tacho problems are associated with a poor earth connection on the back of it. If the earth looks ok then it would be worth swapping the tacho with a known good one, I'm sure you can pick one up cheap in the classifieds here, just make sure you get a vfr tacho and not rvf (they're not compatible - they look different so you can tell which is which).

You should be able to sort the problem fairly easily, if the rest of the bike is what you're looking for then it shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I know that sounds very basic, but I also know that some people don't have much common sense and therefore think that things are interchangeable; I wouldn't have bought an RVF tacho. Thanks anyway I just googled the NC35 tacho and I can see the difference.

I hoped so. It's not majorly off-putting because, as you said, I'm looking for the rest of the bike. But it's because it will be my second bike, I'd like to get to know the RPMs that match the sound so I'm more comfortable when getting to the higher revs... if you know what I mean. (maybe it's just me that feels this!)

From memory there's a single wire that's attached to the back of the tacho case by a small nut, it's the only one and it's an earth. The tacho gets it's rev signal from the cdi, which gets it from one of the coils, looking over all of these wires to see if the plugs are secured properly wouldn't hurt.

Im pretty sure this is the Tacho earth mate give it a check when you get the bike, the clocks are relatively easy to remove so it shouldnt give you much grief.

yes please, that would be awesome!! if I'm going to be taking the clocks off, I may as well put a new one in! haha (I assume it worked before it was removed )
should I send you a personal message with my number or something? I don't know if there are rules against stuff like sharing personal details, etc. or how some people feel about giving out their details.

I'll take the clocks off as soon as I can (maybe even once I've posted this) and I'll check the earth cable. if it's properly connected, I guess that means it's the actual tacho itself that's not working, so I'll keep the clocks off until I get a working replacement. :)

i bought it for my bike - not realising it was off a vfr and theredfore wouldnt work on my rvf.
